September already! I have two parties I'm supposed to be going to this month and still haven't worked out what gifts to give or what food to take.

Help!

If you get invited to a potluck party what kind of food do you usually take? Do you like to make your own dishes from scratch or do you buy them?

I usually go for the easy chips-n-dip option. I know a couple of simple recipes for things like guacamole or hummus, so I can make that and buy chips.

What are your favourite potluck dishes?

I've never been invited to one, but the dish that immediately popped into my head is corn casserole. A can of whole sweet corn, can of creamed corn, a box of Jiffy cornbread mix, half an 8oz container of sour cream, and sharp cheddar cheese. Mix it all up, bake, cover with more cheese, let that melt. Boom! The stuff is delicious! :bliss:

I always bring dessert since I love sweets. If it's someone I'm good friends with I bake from scratch otherwise I try to pick out something tasty at the bakery or store.

There's this nearby place that makes this amazing broccoli bacon salad and I usually buy a pound or two of it, and then take the leftovers home to eat myself. It's a special treat to me.

I'm the baker of the family, and my friends know this also, so I'm usually tasked with a dessert of some sort.
My other go to meals, depending on what the host needs, are a dill pickle dip with a variety of crackers and such, hash-brown casserole, mexican pinwheels, bruchetta, mini potato skins...you know what, I have too many things to list. I love food and cooking and baking, I always make something from scratch as I truly believe that cooking a good meal for someone is a wonderful way to show you care. I take great pride and satisfaction in feeding people.

I usually ask the host if they have a preference. At my last job it was often a large taco dip or chocolate chip cream cheese brownies, but if they were light on real food, it was meatballs or chourico and peppers at times.

One friend always asks for buffalo chicken dip lately or guacamole. A lot of my family asks for chocolate chip cookies. They are obsessed with them. I usually make what I bring, but last year over the holidays I did cheat and pick up stuffed quahogs and pierogis for some dinners.

I make all sorts of things, depending on the type of potluck, everything from chicken casserole to veggie casserole to salads. There seems to always be too many dips and desserts. Just be sure to make a huge amount, equivalent to a whole meal for one person. I've also seen large potlucks where the food has run out.

It depends on how far I'd need to travel. :)

If I have to switch freeways several times, I prefer to take things that won't slosh around as much and hopefully won't be too worse for wear if I have to throw on the brakes a few times, such as a bundt cake, brownies or cookies, fried rice, or macaroni or potato salad. Or if I don't have time to cook, I might pick up a sliced turkey breast or ham from the deli section at the grocery store.

But if the potluck is closer to home and I can drive like the little old lady that I am, I might take something like lasagna, enchiladas, baked beans, deviled eggs, or guacamole.

I never take homemade chili, BBQ, tamales, or red beans and rice. People take those sorts of things very seriously in our neck of the woods, and I wouldn't want to disappoint anyone or embarrass myself.

I usually do pasta salads in the summer and macaroni and cheese in colder months. I always say I'm going to do something easy and it always takes longer than I anticipate. I have also done mini-meatballs in BBQ sauce that were a hit. I really need to consider the event when bringing hot food to some things. Our church always does a Thanksgiving dinner that starts about an hour after service on Sunday. So trying to get a hot dish there hot doesn't work well.

When I'm really in a pinch for time I do veggie trays or cheese/meat/cracker trays. There are a few places we can get premade sub trays too. Last weekend my stepsister was in town with her kids and my mom had mine for the weekend. So when I got a "hey we're cooking out tomorrow. bring a salad" text last minute; DH and I decided we'd get some potato and macaroni salad on the way. I was on a much needed "vacation" and not about to run out for ingredients or involve myself in anything that resembled work. :p

I have never been to a potluck; however, when I go to my mother-in-law's for holidays, I always bring at least one dessert, two vegetable dishes, and one or two types of homemade rolls or loaves of bread. I am a better than average baker and like to make something special for dessert. I made a Pavlova two years ago and it still gets talked about.

The next holiday we will go for is Thanksgiving, and I already have ideas. I will be making a pumpkin carrot cake with ermine icing and roasted hazelnuts; either a caramel, chocolate, and hazelnut tart or a spicy chai pumpkin pie; roasted cauliflower with ras el hanout seasoning, roasted honeyed carrots, honey pumpkin rolls, and white rolls.

I usually do a spiral ham that I make in the crockpot. It's so easy and everyone loves it. I also do BBQ meatballs using the frozen ones. They are a huge hit too. I have also brought potato and pasta salads.

I usually always make something unless I'm strapped for time. I'm often requested to make cucumber sandwiches, but I hate making them so much so I will only do it if begged. I don't really have a go-to recipe. It kind of depends upon what is needed and what I feel like making. I do enjoy bringing this lasagna I make, but I can't always bring it to work potlucks because we don't have an oven.

I made a Pavlova
I didn't know what that was so I googled it, and wow! I don't normally like merengue but I think I'd make an exception for that. It looks awesome.

I usually make vegetarian lasagna, sometimes hummus as a dip. I'm not vegetarian; I only make the lasagna without meat because I hate cooking meat, lol. Especially ground meat---it smells bad. And I do make a good lasagna, or at least there's never any left.

I make a chocolate fudge gluten free cake as just about anyone can eat it and people adore it.
