My neighbors were evicted for fighting and trashing the apt with holes from fists and someone being thrown into the walls. I heard a lot of yelling through my walls. What I didn't know was that they left a cat behind. I took her in and I have called a cat rescue shelter "The Scratching Post" and am waiting to hear back if they have an opening. I have had a cat for years until my last one passed at about 14 years old. That was about three years ago. Well this cat, which I am starting to call Freya, won't let me pet her yet. I get a hiss and swat if I ty. I don't try anymore I just let her be. I talk to her and over the few days I have had her she has come closer to me even rubbing on my chair and laying down close. She will even meow a little as I talk to her. I move very slow and quietly if she is in the room. She doesn't run and hide as much now. I am being very patient and have gotten on the floor so I don't look as big. I don't try to pet her. I let her make the moves. I am not in the position to be able to pay vet bills. I I suffer PTSD from my own abuse through the years. I am on disability. I also could not afford pet increase on my rent. She really is a sweet heart. I want her to go to a good home probbably with no little kids or other animals. She still is shy and hisses and I think children or a dog would scare her. I love that she is talking now instead of just hissing. She found a couple bottle caps that were hidden who knows where from my previous cat. She likes playing with them. She also found a little pink ball as I found it in my sandle LOL

Thank you for taking her in. Is there any way to talk to the landlord about taking her in and seeing if the fee could be waived? Also looking into low cost vet clinics?

If not, you might try doing a search for Humane Societies and rescue groups that will take in stray cats. Just be sure the shelters are no kill.

Have you checked with friends or relatives to see if they could help you out? Maybe a rescue group could offer a voucher for vet care?

Awww, she looks sweet! She probably lived through some scary moments in a house with so much noise and turmoil. I hate that anyone would abandon an animal, but maybe in this case, it will turn out for the best.

If the previous "owners" paid a deposit for her, maybe the landlord could apply it to you now. It sounds like you'd like to keep her if you can! In the meantime, thank you for taking her in and taking care of her.

Good news. I talked to my therapist and she feels I need the cat as much as the cat needs me. She will be giving me an ESA letter for my landlord. I will be able to keep her for no deposit and no monthly added to rent. Her name is Freya and I cried knowing she is mine.

I am so happy for you! This is going to be a match made in heaven. I'm sure the reason she is so shy and fearful is because she was abused in the other household. Once she gets used to you and knows you won't hurt her or mistreat her, she will be a wonderful companion, following you around the house and asking for treats.
