Hairball? Or Possible Cold?

I will start out by explaining what happened. I was getting a stain out of a shirt, and got distracted and walked away. I completely forgot about the bleach being out in a children’s syringe. (That’s how I “spot” treat shirts that can be bleached.) anyhow, my 3 year old squirted the bleach on our cat. It was a small spot, but still enough to freak me out. I didn’t notice it right away until I noticed some in the floor. When I went to clean it up, that’s when our cat came to me to pet her. And I thought at first my son got her wet with just water, and I went to wipe it off with a towel and I noticed it was the bleach. I immediately gave her a no rinse bath to get it off. Her hairs didn’t dye or anything. And I didn’t notice it on her breath. This was all Tuesday night. Let me say she was 100% perfectly fine before I gave her a bath. After, she licked herself “clean” and it seemed like she did that for an hour or so. I noticed while she was doing it a little later on, she started coughing/hacking. I didn’t think nothing of it. Then she went to sleep and she was snoring really loud. That’s when I noticed something different. She never has snored before or atleast not like that. Well, this morning and throughout the day, I noticed she was wheezing when she breathed, when she purred it sounded “scratchy” (that’s the best way I can explain, like something was in her throat.) and she has been hacking on and off like she’s trying to vomit. When I really got concerned is when I noticed she hasn’t used her litter box any. Then I noticed she hadn’t ate her food or drank any of her water. That’s when I started freaking out. I tried to get her to eat her food by adding warmed butter to it. It didn’t work. So I warmed a little milk up and sat out in a bowl. She did drink a little of that. About 30 minutes later she finally peed. She’s also been lethargy. She’s definitely not herself. And when she meows, she sounds horse like I can barely hear her meow. My first thought she either has a hairball or she has a cold. Or possibly both? She hasn’t had any runny nose, or eyes. She hasn’t been sneezing. No vomiting, no diarrhea. Her stomach does seem to be bigger than normal. So I’m thinking she has a hair ball blocked? Idk. So I decided to go to Walmart to get some hairball gel. I got Petag hairball solution gel. I gave her exactly what the directions said. I had to pretty much force it on her tongue. She swallowed it good and okay. About an hour later she started eating just a couple bites of her food, and even drank some water. And then she got up and started playing.
I cannot afford to take her to the vet right now because of how much it costs. So if I can do home remedies that will help, I’m all for it! She is a healthy cat so this has me a little worried. Also, she is a medium/long haired tabby. I also meant to add in that she keeps licking her coat. She normally doesn’t do it this much. I just want her to feel better and figure out what’s wrong.

She eats Purina Cat Chow Indoor. (As of Aug 1st) She’s 11.10 lbs (slightly over weight and has been on a diet. No change of food just 10% less and getting her to exercise/play more.) she probably weighs a little bit more than that. But not much. She’s 1 1/2 to 2 years old. Any advice would be great! And please no negative comments.

I don’t think the bleach has anything to do with Her symptoms especially since it’s been over 24 hours.

First, I am so sorry your kitty does not feel well. :alright: Second, let me say welcome to thecatsite! I am very glad you came to seek help.:welcomesign: I am not a vet and cannot give medical advice but I think you have taken good steps to help her. Make absolutely sure that she does not have any bleach residue on her fur. You can use a very damp cloth to make sure her fur is clean and help to rub down any loose fur. Licking her fur could have allowed some of the bleach in her system. Licking also could have put loose fur in her system. It’s really hard to know. Our kitties can get into all sorts of things that worry us. Although cows milk is something I would not normally suggest, in this case it may have been a good thing. Any chance you could just call an emergency vet and ask about possible bleach side effects? Just to ask what you can do at home. We all know how hard it is to afford vet fees these days. You are not alone in that! If it is a cold coming on then maybe she will fight it off. You’ve already given her hairball remedy so maybe she will start showing signs of improvement. I am going to try and get another person here who might be able to offer you more help. Please do write back and let us know how kitty is doing. We really do care. :heartshape:
@catsknowme If you are up, any tips here?

If there is no sneezing and no runny nose that you noticed, personally I wouldn't suspect of a cold (unless she starts to sneeze today.) However, I read cats can also have runny nose due to allergy or due to humidity which might happen both about the washing -- if you used a product to wash the bleach off or the bleach itself. Runny nose might go unnoticed as, my cat for example, licks the mucus off when it's small amount. But it would explain the snoring.

I wouldn't be surprised of a hairball since she's a long-haired cat and got bathed. I assume she groomed herself profusely afterward?

If there is plain yogurt where you live, no sugar, no added flavor, just plain yogurt, I suggest giving a dessert spoon. It has probiotics and some antibacterial properties. It's a popular home remedy where I live for digestive issues including mild case of food poisoning and safe for cats in small amounts -- unless of course the cat has intolerance.

I think he ingested or inhaled some of the bleach. Before you found it on him. It causes pnuemonia. So please watch her for signs of pnuemonia, lethargy, loss of appetite, and severe coughing/wheezing. By the way your child could have inhaled it too and got the same thing. I have treated several small children for aspiration pnuemonia, from bleach, cleaners, and gasoline.

She has ate a little bit, not much. She was lethargy but she got up and played a little last night. She has peed a little but I haven’t noticed her poop yet. Her meows still sound horse and her meows still sound rattled. I’d like to give her. A bath in dawn to make sure there isn’t anything left but I don’t want her to lick even more. She was hacking off and on all night. I think I’m going to get her seen tomorrow if she’s not showing improvement.

My Kitty has a lot of hairball problems and when he's breathing I can hear it almost exactly as you described. When he has a blockage it irritates him and he's not himself either. My issue is that Dexter (My Kitty) does not like coughing things up, he puked twice one day and it terrified him, he was afraid of his vomit. I had to take him to the vet later on because I made the mistake of not reading the ingredients on the Petkin hairball lick stick I got, turns out it didn't have enough oil in it to do anything for him. So I went back to Walmart and got Hartz Hairball Remedy Plus, its a gel that Dexter likes to eat, I don't need to make him eat it I just put a little bit on a spoon and he'll lick it up. He started popping out his hairballs last months even tho I've been giving him the gel for 3-4 months now. I guess what I'm trying to say is it sounds like hairballs but you should make sure to check ingredients in the gel you're giving him to make sure it has enough oils, and don't be surprised if it doesn't stop right away, it may take time before he can fully pass the hairball whether he coughs it up or poops it out. Dexy and I wish you guys the best of luck!

I just checked her litter box, she has peed once since last night but still no poop. So I think it could be a blocked hairball honestly.

That makes me feel so much better about my cats symptoms! Because he will play sometimes but he’s lazy acting like he just wants to lay around and do nothing. I don’t think he’s sick like some explained about the pneumonia and stuff because if that was the case, he would still eat/drink, pee/poop. The only thing he’s done so far is peed.
He’s coughing on and off and it sounds nasty like mucusy or something to me, like he’s trying to cough something up. My husband thinks I’m over reacting but I can’t help it. I get paranoid and I’m a huge hypochondriac. (I come by it honestly ‍♀) this PetAg hairball solution has white petrolatum 884mg, veg oil 92.4 mg, glycerin 88 mg, and lecithin 2.2 mg. Idk how many times a day I need to give him aside from the directions. It says just once. I want to get him to eat something that will help him poop but idk anything. He will drink milk but I think that’ll stop him up.
Poor fella. I just want him better and we cannot afford a hospital visit. His vet is booked all this week.

My child didn’t ingest any of it. And I honestly don’t think my cat did either. I didn’t smell it on her breath. And I honestly think the smell would cause her to turn her nose up to it.

Is that all your hairball solution has in it? Are there no other ingredients?

So I looked up the hairball solution you said and it doesn't look like there aren't enough oils in it to really do anything. You want one with lots of oil because it basically helps lube up the area so that the hairball can move, was there other options for hairball remedies there? I can look them up for you and see if they have enough in it to help

I’m not sure if there was or not. I didn’t notice any other. I was in a hurry because it was 11 o’clock at night and I had to drag my son out :(
IF you know of one that works, please let me know!!

I've been giving my cats 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin puree daily to help with bowels as well as hairballs. Their eyes are much clearer now as well.

On the yogurt, can that be plain, unflavored greek yogurt as that is all I eat, or just any plain unflavored yogurt.

I got my Hartz Hairball Remedy Plus at Walmart. If your Walmart doesn't carry that just look at the ingredients and try and see at least 3 different oils, or one that says "For Veterinary Use Only" somewhere on the front. I have Salmon Flavor and my cat loves it, so maybe look for a fish-flavored one

Take the worms to the vet and ask for a test. Or use Profender as that’s the only one I know that covers for all roundworms, hookworms, AND tapeworm.
I got some Remedy Recovery pet worker for dogs, cats, puppies and kittens from tractor supply. I can’t afford a vet bill which would be $200+

I think the worms made her sick so now I’m treating for them and hopefully I’ll see somewhat of a difference in the morning. Fingers crossed. Her belly has been pudgy the last several weeks so I’m thinking she had worms for awhile I just didn’t know or think anything of it. Poor girl

I have no idea how effective it is but if it doesn’t cover all roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworm, you need something else for the one that is left out. Like if it doesn’t treat tapeworms too, you could try this
