I rescued Sunny 2 month-old kitten last week hoping I can find someone who would adopt him. first doctor diagnosed him with hip dysplasia...another vet I sent X-rays to thinks it's neurological and that it cannot be fixed. appointment with another vet is set for Friday.
Sunny doesn't seem to control his urine when playing. he doesn't use the litter box even after showing him many times. doesn't seem he can move his tail, and I caught him once pooping while asleep... otherwise he just pees and poops everywhere. On the bright side, he is active and likes to play a lot. However, healthy or not, I cannot keep for a long time. one option is to return him to the courtyard where I found him, which my friend objects to. however, she is thinking about putting him down if he doesn't get adopted. There is no way I can do this to him... what to do?

I'd contact rescues in your area and see if any are willing to take on a special needs kitten. Putting him back in the courtyard will be a death sentence, so please don't take that route. Either he has a hip problem, neurological proble, spine problem, or something else but whatever the problem his mobility is likely impact along with the potty problems. Potty problems will draw predators to the area (why cats bury their waste, to reduce smell and hide their location better) or scavengers. Either one will likely mean his death along with possibly mobility or cognitive issues impacting his ability to react and get away from danger.

There are rescues and rescuers with the resources and background to handle the special cases. If there isn't one in your area I'd recommend reaching out to some of the well know ones and seeing if any can help you or point you to someone who can. If you can share where you are, someone on here might be able to help find one in your area.

Yes, please contact local rescues for this kitten and pursue others if necessary. He certainly cannot be returned to the courtyard. Maybe one of the vets knows someone who would adopt a special needs cat -- can't hurt to ask. There are wonderful people who are willing to adopt a kitty with medical issues and give them loving homes. And it may turn out to be something that is treatable. A Google search of "special needs cats" turned up a number of places, although they may not be near you. Please don't give up and thank you so much for caring for this little one!

Yes! Please continue in the process of finding a home! Many people reserve their the space in their homes just for special needs kitties. This baby needs love more than any other you could have rescued. You literally saved a life by bringing this one in. I have pulled in kitties with hip issues and with surgery, they were able to have a normal life. No matter what the issue, this kitty should not be put down as long as it is not suffering with no hope of a decent life.
Many rescue groups areavailzble all over. If you can’t find someone through a local rescue or through a vet, look further away. If you need help locating groups, please just post back. Many here would be willing to assist you. You did a truly wonderful thing by saving this kitty! Thank you!

It may be a temporary issue from being injured. Don't give up until you find out. He may not know what a litterbox is and it may take a while. I taught one by mixing dirt in to mimic outside conditions. There are 'diapers' fro cats too, you might want to look into them. Bless you for helping him.....

Thank you for your replies~I'm in China now for one year. there are no shelters or organizations for this type of kitty and even for normal cats. one organization only rescues and takes in cats found on highways. I will contact them after the vet visit on friday.

HK and shenzhen are too far. For Best Friends (shanghai), I will ask them after getting (hopefully) a clear diagnosis from this new vet. I have asked animal groups on WeChat (chinese version of fb) to share his information. Also contacted SAR but no reply so far. SAR btw does a great job with dogs and they helped me rescue a dog last year. she is now adopted in Canada. however, they don't deal with cats. I see many cat posters every day about healthy kittens and cats, very few people are willing to adopt them. I'll keep y'all posted :)

Thought I already replies to your message but found it as saved draft...apologies~
back from the vet. summary:
Can his condition be fixed with surgery? If it's nerves, no. Need to do MRI cost starts at 4000 yuan, depending on the case, to check nervous system. Small chance can be virus, then take antibiotics. Need to wait and see if improve. Can he learn to use litter box or must use diaper? Need to see when he is 4 months...discussed methods to solve pb like give him bigger litter box when he grow a little bit more. also vet said depends on whether Sunny has control/aware he is pooping/urinating? If he has no control, maybe cannot use litter box.Can I wash him? He is not vaccinated. More vulnerable to catch cold. So answer is no. Is his bladder ok? Not clear on first xrays (ones done at another clinic). then why does he have a big belly? Maybe eats too much or has worms. stomach and large intestines are big (from previous X-rays). When can we deworm him and vaccinate him? Deworm now (done). And for vaccine come back in 15 days. Last week he was deflead in another clinic, does he still have fleas? didn't see any while examining him. we can check in two months again.
and that's it back//he pooped in the taxi and at the vet. luckily we had a box in the car and the vet was ok with it. gave him a chance to observe Sunny.

anyway cannot afford MRI :( so for now keeping him and seeing if his condition can improve.

You are doing an amazing job! We are all hoping for improvement and a good outcome. I have seen kitties make many inexpected recoveries and perhaps this all will pass as you get him nourished, comfortable and healthier. Much can change. Thank you for the update! I’ve had you both on my mind. Please continue. :heartshape:

I don't have anything I can add to the rest, but I can say a bloated belly in Cats that have been outside is often because of worms. He was dewormed so if that was the cause you should notice it returning to a normal size within the next few days.

Thank you:) I've started an instagram page for him, sunny_sfighting , though myself I never use social media (fb, insta...). I'll try to post more pictures now and then.

yes, 24hours later, I can see the worms in his stools...I'm a little worried though that these worms/eggs can be infectious...also worried he might have toxoplasmosis. I clean his litter (gloves) sometimes I put a face mask on other times I don't :p hope won't be an issue later.

No need to worry about the worms in his stool, if they're being passed then the dewormer is doing it's job and they're already dead. Since it's confirmed that he does have worms then his belly should go back to normal fairly quickly once all the worms are gone.

The vet can test for toxoplasmosis, I'm actually surprised that wasn't already done.

well I am in china...I keep asking vets what can we do now and they haven't brought that up. I will ask the vet to do the test in two weeks at the time of vaccination. so far, he's being deflead and dewormed. he has ear mites and I haven't been religiously applying the medicine every day in his ears :( so I need to catch up on that. some days he gets very excited and cannot calm down just play..so I don't want to get bitten:headshake:

If he starts biting, hiss at him. It's what a mother Cat and siblings do to let unruly Kittens know to knock it off. Eventually he will learn that is not acceptable and stop.
