Hi all & sorry off here so long but last Fri. our unknown age tuxedo cat was diagnosed in emergency w/ Glaucoma in r. eye. The surgeon opted to remove it asap due to inflammation & causing serious pain as it was totally blind.

It was very costly but even more heartbreaking seeing her Fri. aft. w/ a cone head on in carrier, when they gave her back after she awoke from surgery. She no longer can see out the r. eye as its stitched over & doc said it will grow fur over it.

I am stunned & traumatized myself seeing this & so sad & devastated this happened to her, as in '12 (3 yrs after we caught as a stray of unknown age then in '09) she went thru I-131 Radiation treatment for Hyperthyroidism. So now been thru alot.

Ok, well they sent the affected eye to lab & will have followup w/ her & doc next wk when lab results confirm the cause, we hope.

Ayone ever deal w/ this or know any regarding it? TY.

TY so much! Added to this my g/f has had medicine dehydration/toxicity of her meds due dehydration & is still recovering almost 2 wks in icu as of yet. Then I came home Fri morn from her hosp to find our cat almost passed out from likely pain/inflammation of eye. The rest is history re eye surgey :( but when it rains it snows here in AZ.

Oh, also, ready for this, g/f's doc who goes to his vaca home in Canada in summers came back to AZ & called me, said he has family emergency here. His wife is dying, i believe of cancer. Unreal sad..

Oh & our cat's primary (all-cat ONLY for 7 yrs now) vet is in surgery for HERSELF this wk & next wk too, recovering from personal human surgery on our vet herself by cardiology. Can u figure ALL this??

Bless your heart, she'll adapt, cats are wonderfully resilient :vibes::hugs:. :crossfingers:. :heartshape:
All say cats adjust w/ one eye indoors. But I WON"T EVER adjust thinking I could have done/seen/caught it earlier. Yet, in July she went for 6 mo checkup & not noted as there or worrisome. Then boom..few wks later.. eye removal?

Wow, talk of everything happening at once! It’s an avalanche!

Don’t beat yourself up too much for not noticing your cat was in pain. Cats are masters at hiding pain and glaucoma happens fast! The important thing is you made sure she’s not in pain any more. She’ll adjust quickly, I am sure.

This is unreal. It is so sad all around for everyone. My g/f likely is/will be ok soon. My cat is really upsetting & I awake & am shocked this is real. I cannot process this yet no way or how.

Her doc's wife dying in hospice is also beyond sad for him as he's older semi-retired & sees limited patients.

Lastly, our vet currently in the hosp
[herself for surgery just made me shake my head in disbelief. What meteorite hit me?

It is what it is. I just hope that prior 8/6 when g/f went into hospital, med toxic, that she did not fall on our cat. If so, it would cause blunt force trauma & thus the glaucoma. She does not recall that day or day before. Not good. Lab results of the eye will reveal cause next Tue, when I take cat to followup w/ eye vet.

Honestly, seriously! Geez, i feel for all of you :(
Everyone assures cats do ok w/ one ye. I know if it was me I'd go berserk & be out of my mind w/ anger. But cats do not process life as we do or they'd hate everyone of us for something at some point -- like everyday. lol

Is it really true cats are ok w/ single eye as older kitty?? Or is this bunk that folks use to calm me down?

It is really true. I just talked with someone who wanted me to pass along that she had a kitty that had lost both eyes. That cat was able to accommodate and acclimate by using her other senses, her nose, ears and whiskers. She got to the point she could, as long as things weren't moved around, jump, climb and get into mischief :)

If you can, take one step at a time and don't let your mind get tangled up, until the results of the tests come in. We just heard back on our boy and although the results are conflicting, we're basically saying that he is the same as he was 15 minutes before we talked to the vet, which is to say not in pain, purring, talkative, and content. :vibes: :crossfingers:

Youre right. One step. Hard for Type AAA me to do but for her I will do it. She seems less pain, eating great, sleeping good (eating/sleeping WAY better than nervous me). Purring & allowing petting & brushing. Back to semi normal but that eye missing hurts my heart for her...

We're still on earth & Tues. is her eye surgeon followup. Wish her luck! SHe's eating/sleeping/peeing/pooping well. Seems playful just shocks me w/ one eye:(

SHe adjusts far better than I re her. Also, she had a UTI that had an injection of long acting antibiotic day of eye surg (8/16) & so UTI is gone. Also, had a 3 day pain med injection that day to alleviate pain/swelling. She seems as good as new--albeit I still harp re the missing eye :( I'll never get over that part....

TY mom! & on Wed morn she has her primary all cat vet (she was in surgery last wk herself!!!) to eval her overall. I hope this Tues & Wed brings good news. Now she is behind couch, stretched out like before her surg. She was not looking good nor going behind it (a fav spot when healthy) to sleep there when she was real bad in pain.

She was barely eating (not at all & lost .5lbs in a few wks) & sleeping sorta upside down on couch the nite I came from hosp & my g/f & -- then... found her & rushed to ER vet. Next morn was her eye doc emergency asap. He took it out that noon. Unreal how fast it went from her feeling ok to looking like death to thinking kidneys were acutely gone -- to it being an eye thing?! I still can't process the speed this occurred.

Meanwhile g/f remains in rehab hosp til further notice. Her furbaby misses her I know but is so happy be out of pain I bet. I'm the nutcase now still looking the eye over & thinking how i can restore sight. Hmm, if I can do that i will be a very rich man. SInce no one on earth has ever done that. ;)
