Most cats are not any particular ancestry, just regular old domestic cat in either long or short hair. The idea of selectively breeding cats for appearance has only been around for a few hundred years and temperament even less. Most modern breeds of cats are from naturally occurring traits that are slightly refined so you can get lookalikes from the general cat population very easily. Plus the number of actual cats out there with a true connection to a recognized purebred is probably somewhere in the 5% range if I was making a very generous guess. It is very very common for cats to be misidentified as a breed and backyard breeders thrive on that misidentification.

That said, since he has a shorter face which is typically more of a selectively bred trait as opposed to naturally occurring it is possible he has some flat faced breed like the Persian somewhere. Which is just a possible not a for sure. Cats genetics are such a mixed bag that it is just as possible that he isn’t and just happens to have a flatter face. But if I had to hazard a wild guess, a Persian ancestor somewhere in the lines would not surprise me. I don’t think his eyes or coat are not quite right to be too recent though and the flatter face could also be holdover from something else or just naturally occurring.

What a cutie! Technically, without having pedigree papers, he would be called a cream and white bicolor Domestic Longhair. Since he has a fairly flat face, I think there’s a chance that he could have some Persian ancestry. If you’re curious, you could get him DNA tested to see if he has genetic similarities to Persian cats, or maybe another breed. In any case, I do hope you end up adopting him! He is adorable and gorgeous!

I too, would say some Persian background, with a possibility of Maine Coon. Without papers though it really doesn't matter, without a DNA test there is no sure way of knowing. Both of those breeds have calm, pleasing personalities. It would be known as a cream and white domestic longhair.

Thank you for your reply, it helps to know what is the breed as what you have mentioned it gives an indication to their temperament and also potential health issues. I have a Maine Coon already and am looking for a good cat companion for my kitty as well as my young daughter and/or my ageing dad who at 90 and slowly losing his faculties, I thought it would be good to have a cat with a gentle disposition who can give emotional support for him

di and bob di and bob - wondering if you could share which feature(s) are you looking at that make you say there is a possibility of Maine Coon ?
