Whenever I talk about my cats, I always get the dreaded question... "Oh! What kind of cats do you have?" And my answer is always "Well, one is a tortoiseshell, and the other... Well, I'm not sure. All I know is she's black and white." I always get annoyed not knowing how to describe my girl! Can you guys help? What does she look like to you? I tried to get some pictures to show her fur pattern and her size.

Easy. Say domestic... They just want to know where to stand, if its a purebred or a very look alike, the conversation will start from there....

This is a domestic (alike the great majority of cats). If the tail is bushy you will say medium- or longhair, if its not, it will be shorthair...

And black and white, exactly as you said.

I suppose its the same with your tortie.

99% of the time Domestic short or long hair is their breed no matter what.

I would describe this kitty as a black and white domestic... I think she is a shorthair but I can't see her tail in these pictures. Either domestic shorthair or domestic longhair :) Most cats are not any particular breed.

It is actually kind of a silly question, because the answer is (or should be) the same 99 out of every 100 times you ask. The answer is "Domestic short/longhair."

I suppose that you can get an answer like, "Dilute tortoiseshell domestic medium hair", but that's just adding color variety in front of breed, like how might describe Freya as a blue point traditional Siamese (since she'd be just as Siamese if she was, for example, a lilac point.)

Anyhow, that's my take on the question, as ironic as it may be coming from someone who actually has a pedigreed cat.
