I have a cat that gave birth the night before last (08/16/19). This is not her first batch or kittens, but once these are weaned, she is getting spayed. She was very large and gave birth to 6 kittens. Ever since she had given birth her kittens weren’t cleaned (they’re still cold and dirty) and she hasn’t properly cleaned up herself. She is very low on energy (sits in the same spot) and isn’t feeding the babies. She still has drops of blood wherever she sits (it’s not constant but still has blood) Do I need to help her? I am taking her to the vet tomorrow, but until then I need help on knowing what I can do to help. :( She has been completely fine giving birth before but she seems to be struggling after this batch..

+ She isn’t eating or drinking.
Thank you for any help I can get. The vet is closed and I’m also researching across the Internet.

Did she pass all the placentas? Is there an odour coming from her nono area?
She had one kitten stuck to her by cord and she came up to me begging for help. The kitten was stuck flying around and she couldn’t get it off. Mama cat was going in circles trying to get the baby but couldn’t. -> We had sterilized scissors and had to cut the cord to help both the mama and the baby.. Later she had two more that she couldn’t get loose. She was too big to reach down there to help herself and was able to get the other three babies out. It all together took hours for the full birth. She has never had this problem until now.
Yes, there is a bad odor. :(

Metritis
If a fetus or placenta is not expelled shortly after delivery, the mother cat may develop a uterine bacterial infection.

It is characterized by:

  • fever
  • loss of appetite
  • reluctance to nurse
  • listlessness

There may or may not be vaginal discharge.

This condition must not be left untreated. Your veterinarian will discuss a plan of treatment that includes expulsion of the fetus or placenta and a regimen of antibiotics.

Oh my! How are things today? Have you been to the vet yet? I hope mom is feeling better and feeding the kittens or you will need to clean and feed them by hand. I’m very worried for your cat and her kittens, so please update as soon as you can!

Any updates? Your observations are very good - you will be able to give the vet good details. Until mama kitty begins eating, you should rub white karo corn syrup or honey onto her gums and syringe feed her some unflavored pedialyte, just a little at a time, in small but frequent doses. Be sure to keep mama kitty and babies warm (but keep a cool area adjacent to where they are so they can cool off if needed). If possible, please clean up the babies and supplement feed if they aren't nursing. Ideally, you would give them colostrum (people who keep goats and kitten rescue groups often have colostrum in their freezer).
Another consideration for your cat is hypocalcemia which is another veterinary emergency. Please give us updates!! We are here to support you in all circumstances whether good or bad, devastating or jubilant. :vibes::cheerleader::grouphug2::rbheart:

Updates *********
Sorry to be so late!

We ended up taking her on the Sunday (emergency vet visit) because we were so worried!! She had a nasty abdomen infection and uterus infection! She had 2 dead babies inside of her. :( This would have been an 8 litter. Her last one was 4 kittens... this has been very hard on her.
She ended up getting surgery and is doing better. We have to get her to eat but it should become natural once she gets better.

Sad news: Mama cat was too sick to care for her kittens and didn’t feed them. My family and I have been taking care of them (by flea removal -FLEAS are the WORST- and feeding formula/vitamins along with a heating pad since mama doesn’t want to be around them) there is sadly only one left. We have taken in and cared for many kittens but this batch had it horrible. :(

I’m so sorry. I hope the remaining one makes it. Hand raising is a lot of work.

Did mama kitty get spayed during surgery? Is she on antibiotics? Does she have pain meds? If not, call the vet and ask to pick some up.

As she feels better she should eat more. Tempt her with Gerber turkey or chicken baby food for now. Put clear Pedialyte in her water bowl. Poor mama.

Condolences on losing the babies - it could be that the infection got into them, too. At any rate, they are safe now and nothing can hurt them. I am grateful that Mama Kitty still has one kitten to nurture. Have you asked the vet if there are any concerns to be aware of with the remaining kitten?
Are you supplementing while mama cat is on pain meds (hopefully she is)?
Thank you for the update - it really helps us as wondering can be torture ; at TCS, we truly do care about ALL kitties and their guardians. Prayers and vibes for Mama and Baby :vibes::vibes::vibes::heartshape::grouphug2:
