I would advise against toilet training. The reason being that it’s really important to keep track of your cat’s toilet habits and it won’t be possible to track the size of his/her pees or quality of poops if they are going in the toilet.. especially if they are flushing. Cats can’t communicate verbally with us and they often hide pain so one of the only ways we know when something is wrong is when the size of their pee changes or the shape and texture of their poop is off. I also feel like cats need to be able to cover their poop. It’s an instinctual habit for them. As Jackson Galaxy says... toilet training is primarily for the convenience of the owner and serves no good purpose for cats.

I have been trained to close the lid so he doesn't use the toilet. His instinct is to go in water.
In water means ANY water.
Go means pee, poop, or just flat out him dive right in. Generally, all three in no particular order.
Yeah, I've been trained well to keep that lid closed. :flail:

Growing up we had one cat that just learned to use the toilet on its own. I hated it, since poop was left to sit there until someone noticed it it , it was smelly and embarrassing if the cat got to it before a guest.

This is the other side of the story. Years ago Zoe, who was a sweet and intelligent rescue, decided on her own that she preferred the toilet to the litter box. It was not important to my husband or me if the seat was up or down, so most of the time they were up. I have to agree that toilet use does not allow you to observe urine or stool enough to know if there is a problem which was my objection. Zoe got a little territorial about her bathroom over time and would pace and grumble if someone went inside and closed the door. In the end her toilet use was not harmful to her, it was not unsanitary, it was even funny, but I would not ever try to train a cat to use a toilet.

That’s quite funny! I’ve never heard of kitties who prefer to use the toilet. Guess it can happen. :)

Years ago, and I'm talking close to 50 years ago last year of high school I was taking piano lessons. While at the woman's house I heard a toilet flush. I looked at her and said "I thought you lived alone." She told me she did, but that was one of her cats that she trained to use the toilet and also flush the toilet. They didn't have those kind of contraptions to put on a toilet back then so I have no idea how she did it as she's probably long gone by now or 140 years old
