What foods do you recommend coming from Petco? It's sad I can't see what ingredients are on the cans and bags of dry/wet food shopping this way but I have no choice. Getting rid of the kibble n bit I bought

Just open up a separate web browser window or tab and use that to look up the ingredients of the foods you want to add to your cart. Food ingredients are listed on the main Petco web site. It might be a little confusing and a pain to constantly switch between windows or tabs but it's doable.

Thanks. I am on a budget and so I do use the friskies pates. I hope those are fine. Back when Pepper was alive these foods were good for her (I suppose or she wouldn't have lived 23 years) but now with so many choices, changes in recipes, pet food recalls I"m not sure what is what anymore.

I recommend natures variety. All of my cats have loved it and done well on it when I rotate to it. It’s high cal and high meat so you won’t feed as much. Friskies canned pates are good budget food. As are fancy feast pates.

When I had 4 cats (ranging 9-14 lbs) I would use two canned foods a day (split amongst them) and half cup of kibble per cat a day. And the 10 lbs bag would last me a month. All my cats have been lean and at a healthy weight since adopting them. I also use tiki, and orijen reg red. But those are more $$ but still high quality and high calorie and meat.

Thank you. What brand of dry food did you use? For a budget that is. I'm not getting the kit n kaboodle anymore as both are showing allergies to the food by sneezing a lot. It worked for a crunch and sneaking around Mom but if I can get this food delivered at a decent time then all the better.

I got Tiki Cat grill variety and it's here now but why is it all fish/seafood? I thought fish and seafood was not all that great for cats and thought Tiki Cat was a good brand. :(

It seems your not too keen on feeding fish, but petco sells their own brand, whole hearted which Lily and Zoe just love. They have tuna, tuna and sardine, shrimp, and then they also have chicken, chicken and pumpkin, and I think some turkey flavors in there, the Turkey may be pate? Anyway they are pretty good ingredients and the price you can't beat, 69 cents a packet. My two have started loving the fish a bit too much but they eat it so well, I've pretty much moved to whole hearted brand exclusively.

Tiki is a good brand. They use almost no fillers in any of their foods. The canned is pricey to me though for what u get. It tends to be low calorie. And yes they use tons of fish. Only variety they have without fish is the after dark. Which is chicken based and only sold in small cans.

Natures variety is the brand I mentioned yes. It’s called natures variety raw boost to be exact. Changed my cats life when I discovered it. They are an exile to company too. And very forth coming with information about their products.

Ok thanks. I wonder why they use so much fish though? Isn't fish supposed to be bad for cats? At least from what I"m reading on these forums. I guess I can use them for one or two days a week. They like the mackarel and sardines but I have to find a way of cutting it up as they licked all the gravy (yep back to that again) and leaving the hunks of fish there. I don't get eat. Shaman ate dry food why can't she eat the mackarel/sardines from Tiki?

A lot of “good” brands make food that will sell, and that is cost effective enough. Fish flavors are popular, and so most companies, even high end amazing ones like Rawz, have fish flavors. I like Tiki Cat after Dark, but it is quite expensive for the number of calories.

I never had all this with Pepper. She hated fish of all kind and hated liver so I knew exactly what to get. And the dry food/wet food was different back then. I guess I did something right, she lived 23 years. But now with all this reading I'm doing I wonder if I can do better for Shaman and Treasure then what I did for Pepper.

From Petco I usually grab Soulistic (their house brand of Weruva) or their brand, WholeHearted. Fish is fine in moderation for most cats.

As for the dry food there, I stick to Nature's Variety Instinct, but on a more limited budget I would look at WholeHearted dry, Taste of the Wild, Canidae, or even Purina Pro Plan.

Friskies is a fine wet food, especially for a budget!

They like the mackarel and sardines I gave them. Nothing like Pepper who snubbed fish of all kinds But yes, it is a treat.

I have a question though. How long does unopened wet cat food last? I have a/c so it's not sitting outside in the heat and humidity? I ask because I have like a total of 30 cans of cat food fish and was thinking of feeding to them once a week. If it doesn't last long I can do 2 cans a week.

I have no preference if I serve fish or not. As I said in my post, I've been reading through the forum on this site and see that fish is not all that good for cats and so that is why I ask. Again I have no idea as Pepper never liked fish so it was something I never bought for her. These 2 love fish obviusly, but as Ijust said threads on here about it being bad is why I'm asking.

Fish is generally not great.

It has been linked to hyperthyroidism, although I’m not sure how big those studies were. It is also high in phosphorus and magnesium, which can be an issue in cats with a history of urinary tract disorders or kidney disease. So it’s good to avoid feeding it at every meal, like for humans we don’t want to eat fried food every meal.

Thanks. So once in awhile is ok. I was just wanting to know that. Will these cat food cans last for 6 months? They'll be inside the house so not getting too hot or too cld.

I should think so. Usually there is a Best by date on the can, and most of them seem to be a year out at least
