On weekdays, Melody is my third alarm clock. My radio alarm goes off, I hit the snooze. The alarm on my phone--out of my immediate reach--goes off five minutes later. If I lay there too long ignoring he phone alarm, Melody starts meowing her complaints about the slow breakfast service. It actually works and keeps me on schedule.

Of course, now Melody associates the radio alarm with me getting up and feeding her. So, after a middle of the night bathroom trip on my part, I will sometimes come back to find her on the bookcase headboard batting at the clock trying to get it to go off.:hyper:wake up:hyper:wake up:please:...………….:noway::sleep::sleep::sleep:

On the dot of 5.30 am Blue attacks my toes under the blankets..I swear at him then he stands at bedroom door and howls and I howl back then turns into a contest who can be the loudest.
God knows what the neighbours think as I leave the window open at night and they can probably hear but too bad..we are having fun!!

I advocate for cats needing loving permanent homes in shelters and elsewhere. I see all kinds of descriptions of cats' personalities, and the other day I saw "a loud-meowing cat" needing a home. I haven't stopped laughing since. My Tarifa is a very loud-meowing and talkative cat. I love that about her!

*Tarifa tortleshell, greeting ME in the afternoon. She also greets me this way in the morning. We have long, running conversations like this.* :hearthrob::hearthrob::hearthrob::lolup:

I usually wake up with my kitty either draped over my neck purring loudly or trying to nurse off my ear. So it's usually a whispered "good morning Neko-chan" . On the rate days she's not in bed with us, it's "where's my little girl"

Phoenix has been waking me at 0400 lately, almost as if she has her own internal alarm... it's eerie, kinda like Swiss timing, LOL. She makes a weird rolling noise in her throat to greet me and let me know she's awake and hungry... but I refuse to feed the three cats their canned breakfast until 0530 at the earliest, since I let them outside afterward and it HAS to be light enough for safety's sake. This means the three cats start playing at 0400, chasing each other around the house and keeping themselves occupied. There are "crunchies" on the table every night (Friskies dry food), so it's not like the cats will ever starve, but I'm adamant about NOT feeding them the canned food until daybreak, preferably not until the sun's rays start slanting over the Dragoons. While it's still dark and the cats play every morning, I snooze a bit and catch some more rest.

When I deem it light enough to safely allow the cats outside, then I haul myself outta bed and head for the nearby bathroom... in recent years, I've taken to drinking plenty of water overnight to rehydrate, you understand. Wake up thirsty, guzzle water, go back to sleep... maybe use the bathroom during the night to unload some of that water. Well, every morning, all three kittehs follow me into the bathroom and circle at my feet like so many sharks... I've actually taken to sitting down on the wooden seat so I can pet the knucklehaids, LOL. Little Phoenix is usually the first one in with me, followed closely by the other two. Crackhead eventually & invariably goes for the "high ground"---stepping up onto the garden tub (to my left), climbing onto the window sill I widened (behind me), and stepping over to the sink counter (on my right), where he can greet me face-to-face.

Tiger sprawls across the larger bathroom rug, that's his spot once he gets petted a few times... Phoenix will keep circling at my feet, cadging all the petting action she can get, LOL. The four of us make a pretty comical picture, but it's a big bathroom so there's plenty of room for each of us to do his or her thing. Once I wash my hands and splash water on my face, it's off to the kitchen like the Pied Piper, all three cats following me and getting underfoot... we do this ritual every single morning, it never changes. Upon reaching the kitchen, Crackhead jumps up onto the counter to watch me split two cans of food three ways (and to get an early start on his plate), while the youngsters circle below and loudly meow as if---AS IF---they're STARVING, LOL. At long last, I lower the two plates to the kitchen floor for the youngsters, and they start macking their portions. Dunno why I let Crackhead eat on the counter... seniority, I suppose. :petcat:

ANYWAY, THAT'S HOW I GREET MY CATS EVERY MORNING, OR HOW THEY GREET ME... I'VE WOKEN TO WORSE SCENES IN MY "TRUCKING DAZE."

P.S. Hope this isn't TMI for site members, LOL... but I've grown accustomed to having all three kittehs follow me into the bathroom, and the kittehs all know that breakfast will soon be served. :purr:

Lexi sleeps on me all through the night. Clyde is often laying at my side when I wake up. My wife has the alarm set for 6:00 every morning. Lexi takes the alarm as the signal that it will soon be time to wake me up to be fed. Somewhere between 6:15 and 6:45 she has harassed me enough that I get up. While I sit on the side of the bed, Lexi sits next to me, Loki and Bonnie come in to our bedroom and around the bed to greet me, and if Clyde wasn't on the bed, he also comes to greet me. We all have a nice chat and petting session.

As soon as I stand up they all head for the kitchen. I feed them and officiate in case someone finishes early and tries to steal another cat's food. Once they are done, I go back to bed. At that point, Lexi continues to sleep on me and Loki hops up on our headboard. When I do finally decide to get up, Clyde and Bonnie are often in bed with me.

What a wonderful mental picture your post conjures up, Sidewinder Sidewinder and one I'm pretty familiar with. I call ours "a forest of cattails" especially when the furmmily was larger and there were wafting tails everywhere. It was hard to walk from the counter to their dining area! juggling bowls as I went.
Former Mojave resident (and eternal desert lover) here. It must be beautiful where you live. Desert rats understand -- the rest, not so much but I'm definitely one of the former.

Haha, I hear ya... a "forest of cattails!!!"

I love the high desert, plus I can see at least five different mountain ranges from my property... each range has radical recreation areas too, which is nice for those active in the outdoors. :yess:

Forgot to mention that when I let the cats out, they always go into the fenced yard first, AFTER I check the 'hood for coyotes. I do this while they're eating, checking views from windows on all sides of my home. Once the cats are outside, I unblock & unlock the cat door so they can get back in whenever they want... every evening around dusk, I secure the cat door by locking it and placing a nearby end table in front of it (keeps the cats from trying the locked door). Gotta be careful with kittehs in Arizona, due to the predator situation, but the greatest danger lies at night when predators step up their game, days are safe enough as long as there are no large raptors in the area.

Some site members here never let their cats out, but my kittehs gotta run free... just like me. I do my best to minimize the danger, I only wish I had started locking them all down every night while Sage was still here. I don't know for certain whether Sage was picked off by varmints... guess I'll never know, but he WAS 20 years old, possibly even older, so he MIGHT have simply crawled off to die somewhere, or died of natural causes while in the field, 10-4? Who knows? Maybe he'll surprise the heck outta me by showing up one day... in the meantime, I'll do my best to safeguard these youngsters while still allowing them all the freedom I enjoy... and the fact that they eagerly go outside every morning tells me they're enjoying themselves. :runningcat:

Our place had a 4-stall barn and my ex built out the compound with cat fencing, so they had 2 12x12 barn stalls which we were insulating and carpeting, a cat door between them, and a secured outdoor compound that ran the length of 3 of the stalls. We had a swamp cooler, an oil heater for winter, and a mister out in the compound. It was pretty rough, but we would have improved it had he not decided to dump us all. (Long story, won't bore with it.)
The compound had boulders all around the base so no one could dig in or out, too. Our cats never went "out" beyond that. Our in-house cats had a catio with a cat door and they could go out there except when it snowed or when a sandstorm was coming through.

Yeah, you never know, Sage could return. One of our guys somehow escaped early on when we moved up there, and we put up signs, put a newspaper ad, etc. but he never came back to us. I'm heartbroken, but I like to think of Golden Boy Cat, ridin' the range, the bane of every varmint.

That "catio" is a good idea for those who don't like to let their cats out... wouldn't be too hard to construct one either. Nice little spread, sorry to hear the bad news... of course, I've been kicked to the curb myself, usually for partying too hard, LOL.

Yeah, it was Paradise for us for three magical years.
There are so many plans available to buy online, everyone can keep their cats safe! My ex was a finish carpenter so he knew how to do everything DIY. Cat-fencing an existing fence isn't hard or expensive and it really gives peace of mind.

I'm a "Jack-Of-All-Trades, Master Of None" (except writing & sailing, LOL). I try to do everything myself when it comes to my property, but there are gaps in my knowledge... thank goodness there are so many video tutorials in cyberspace. I do all the work on my car too, I don't like others messing things up, LOL. Much of this DIY attitude stems from being a notoriously cheap b@stard, 10-4? I don't pay ANYBODY to do something I can do MYSELF, LOL. :smash:

My dad was like that, so of course I agree! though I have a lot to learn about a lot of stuff and I do hire painters/roofers/plumbers because I can't do some of that myself. I am my own tech support, though ;):yess:
