Well my cat as black crusty stuff in his nose again, and I feel like I'm at my wits end. I did some looking up online and I found a few different images that looked like what he has but no one from the photos ever posted what it was. I also seemed to have some a crossed that, it seems to happen with cats that have orange. Which Tom, is a white and orange cat. I have been giving him lysine for years, but I don't really feel like it makes much of a difference. Since we moved into this new place, about 2 years ago, the black in his nose comes more and more often. Each time we rush off to the vet and they give antibiotics, sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn't. I'm feel so warn out. In the last couple of rounds we tried giving him anti-inflammatory, which seemed to help and now this time we have been trying an allergy pill. The allergy pill also seems to help somewhat, instead of the crust being in both sides of his nose its only in one. Every couple of days I clean it off with a wet rag, which he hates and it comes back a couple of days later.
The vet said for $300 they will put him unconscious and take a sample from up his nose to have it tested, and take an xray of his head just to make sure nothing is there that shouldn't be. However they warn of the risk of him not waking back up, given his weight and age. Has anyone else ever had this problem if so what as it, how did you treat it? I'm so scarred for testing but I'm just about at wits end.

Looks like normal cat boogers:) Some cats just get them. No vet treatment is needed. Just clean them off as needed. Give your cat a treat afterwards so he learns that he gets something yummy if he allows you to mess with his nose a bit.

Keeping the house clean may be helpful to minimize nasal mucous. Vacuum, dust, use an air purifier or filter, etc.

Any clue why my vet doen't think they are normal?
How long do you think it would take them to go away on their own?

My first thought is that it is fungal/fungas. That said, I don't think that is necessary dangerous at all. Try dabbing some white vinegar and warm water with a soft paper towel. Wipe his nose with it to get the black fungal stuff off whenever it appears.

It looks like the gunk is on the outside as well? is the cat fairly easy to hold for you and the vet? I would ask him to take a sample, as best he can, what he can get and send it off. It might be enough, so the poor guys doesnt need to be sedated. The vet can even give him a mild sedative to make him calmer, without being put under. Might work, would be less dangerous for the cat, and less expense for you as well. I would want to know what it is, if it were me.
Best of luck, and do keep us updated.

Well my child saw the vet today and they said we won’t do any testing this time around because he is already on the recovery end, we will do it at the start next time.

well, ok. I hope there will not be a next time, but if there is i would tell the vet you really want him to have the stuff tested. Hopefully he will be fine, and no more issues will pop up!

I adopted a persian cat when he was about 3 months old. As he was growing, he started having some discharge coming from his nose. As it gets dry, it forms some sort of black crust. Checked by the vet, we treated it as dermatitis, but he did not respond to the treatment. We then collected samples and sent them to the vet. Both cultures for bacteria and fungus were negative. Am posting the pictures of him as a kitten and recently with the nose condition. If you have any ideas or experience, please send me a message. Thank you very much!

Strangle enough for me it seems to be linked to allergies. My cat gets a daily allergy pill and lysine every day. He is an indoor cat and for the most time his nose doesn’t do to bad, but the min I open the doors and windows to let in fresh air he’s nose starts to get all cruddy again. I’m slowly taking steps to try to keep the house a little cleaner to see if that makes a difference as well. I have yet to find a way to keep up on vacuuming (the vacuum triggers migraines on me) since I feel that is a big issues for him.
