I keep everything. Receipts, manuals, bills, statements, etc. Once a year I go through the files and pull out older stuff to be boxed up and stowed in the attic.

What I am bad at - filing. I don't do it as often as I should and I just keep piling everything on top of the filing cabinet in the closet. A few months ago the pile avalanched and I haven't done anything about it because it's been too hot in this room.

Well, now something we bought a few months ago broke and I am digging through it all for the receipts.

I really need to do better with the filing. :cringe:

Are you good with record-keeping and filing?

I'm really good at keeping records and things, but I really need to work on the filing and organization part of it!:D

You've basically described me with your post lol! I just had an "avalanche" of papers while looking for a deck drawing last week. The avalanche has been picked up, but just piled again.

nope. I always forget to print out the receipts etc. I keep everything in a container but don't always remember to file them..now that most bills I pay electronically I don't keep receipts longer than a year except for tax purpose stuff...I had pay stubs from high school I finally shredded...it's such a relief to not keep all this paper.

No, I'm terrible at it. I manage to throw things that seem important into a box, and then go through the box and file stuff occasionally. But right now I can't find my copy of my birth certificate so. . .yeah, I'm not good at this.

No. My mother is a hoarder, so I do the opposite, I love to throw everything away.

I'm normally very neat and organized except for filing and record keeping. Years ago I kept everything neatly filed but then I started putting it off more and more. So now I have old bills and receipts in several piles that I keep adding to.:help: I used to shred things but now I've gotten behind doing that too. :gaah:

I put bills to by paid by date order on my cork board. After being paid they get filed. I file everything that should be kept immediately. And after tax time I box up last years and start over.

I'm great at keeping records, things like receipts and paid bills go into a box for at least a year then I'll shred them. BUT, I'm horrible at filing things because I just throw them in the boxes in no particular order and I can never find what I'm looking for when I need it. Oh well. :dunno:

I have this exact "system". But my birth cert is in my parents safety deposit box, I know that!

I'm good at both record keeping and filing. I'm actually kind of OCD about keeping everything that may be important and all of it has its place so that I know where it is when I need it. After tax time I box up everything in order and take it to the attic to store it. I write the year on the outside of the box so if I happen to need something I'll know what box to look in.

Yes, the OCD in me keeps things organized. I have a bin where things like paid bills and miscellaneous papers gets tossed and then a file cabinet of folders for things kept long term. Every few months when the bin gets full, I go through and either file it away or toss it. Every couple of years I go through the file cabinet and toss the obsolete stuff.

Yep I'm with you. I keep things but am sadly unorganized. I lose things that I know have to be in the house. I'd be worse than I already am but the BF is mega organized and he gets annoyed after a while with my junk and papers and everything building up and when I lose something and am scrambling to find it. :freak:

I keep receipts in a large mailing envelope and go through it every now and then throw out what I don't need. I need a better system.

Yes. I hate clutter and disorganization. So I have a filing cabinet with files for all the important things - bills, receipts, bank info, taxes, etc. What I am bad at is purging, and I only shred things when I can no longer squeeze another sheet of paper in the filing cabinet.

For items that come with a manual/warranty, I staple the receipt to the manual, and keep in a basket on the shelf in a closet, as I only purge those, once I no longer own the item.

You sound exactly like me. I keep nothing. Everything goes into the trash.
Especially now that we have the computer, I can just keep files in a folder on there, I don't even need much paper. Plus I love having digital music, movies, photos. So much less clutter. :)

Rick is excellent with organization when it comes to all the union local stuff. He has it down to a fine art. On the home front? Not so much. His desk usually looks like a hurricane hit it, although, to be fair, he can usually find what he's looking for. Usually.

I don't file anything; he makes me stay away from the filing cabinet.

I'd say our biggest problem is the daily mail. Junk mail, bills, etc. It goes to the kitchen table and stays there. Piles up. I get frustrated, put the junk mail in the recyclng container (after I remove address labels, that is), then take it all back to Rick's desk. Where it gets "lost" in the hurricane. We used to have a basket for the mail. It got full and I put it back on Rick's desk. Where it went from there, I haven't a clue.

At the office I'm pretty good. I scan what I need and it goes immediately into a computer directory where it belongs. Then I toss the paper copy, usually. I try to bring personal stuff from home and keep it in an office folder because at home - not so organized at all. Sadly. Everything is a hodge podge of mounds of paper. It's truly embarrassing. My husband keeps swearing he's going to just toss boxes in the trash because I haven't gone through them in years which angers me to no end because he himself has his on stuff I wouldn't dream of touching.

Thing is I'm sure most of it IS not worth saving.
