Buprenorphine/Buprenex SR side effects

My 15 year old cat Francie was diagnosed from an ultrasound two months ago with chronic pancreatitis and surrounding organ inflammation of stomach, liver, intestines, as well as kidney disfunction (following a UTI diagnosis by regular Vet when antibiotics Covenia and Orbax didn't stop her vomiting). Cerenia helped but only masks symptoms and doesn't heal core issue.

30 days later I had a 2am paw in the face with trembling and meowing with no let up so I took her to ER Vet. Buprenex injection was given for quick effect and then oral in cheek was prescribed by the ER vet, dosage was .2mg of .6mg/mL strength (important to know strength vs. dose - two very different numbers). Whoa! Up all night and the next day like she was on a bad trip. Called ER Vet and she said it's better than having pain. I'm not so sure since Francie is definitely stressed and stress exacerbates pancreatitis, and bottom line, she didn't get better, only worse.

I took her to a Specialty Vet who prescribed an aggressive med plan including .14-.44 of .3mg/mL buprenex for 6-12 hours of pain relief (amount determines length of time it works). About 30 min in and again for the entire dosage time Francie is unusually jumpy and uncomfortably hypersensitive, looks like she's seen a ghost. "Fraidy Cat" definitely an understatement here. She still eats and pees, pooping not so much.

Vet said start at high dose and work backwards if she gets hyper. Did that and the .14 mg/mL of .3 strength seems least offensive but doesn't cut the pain as well. Vet said we could try other pain meds on next visit next week.

Praying for a Christmas Miracle, grateful for all the healing miracles that have come already. And appreciating all that is possible to keep our kitties safe, happy, and snuggling next to us.

Both of my smaller (12 pounds) cats went in for teeth extractions (14 or so each) and came home after successful surgeries with Buprenex SR shots.  They are indoor/outdoor cats, so normally they are all over the house.  Instead, they are huddling in the room where they get fed, and won't come out for anything, including cream when I have my coffee, which I give them every few days.  They won't come out at all, and whenever I go in, they get really close, rubbing against me and purring loudly, rolling around and demanding petting, etc.

I've never seen this before (they are normally lapcats who come and go as they please).  I'm a bit concerned, and wondering if there's a hallucinogenic effect or something.

Our cat was given an injection of BUPRENORPHINE  on Tuesday.  That's 4 days ago and he is still messed up with the side effects!! I didn't know anything about the drug until now. He went in with a bladder infection and came back psyco cat ! He is normally the most outgoing, strangely friendly, out in the middle of any wild family activity, official door greeter, type of cat. Since coming home from the vet, he has been up in a bedroom under the bed,  coming out just to freak out and go back under. I have felt better after reading that its not just our cat or something else wrong. He is like they say, super skiddish with almost super power hearing, big crazy eyes, walks low to the ground, doesn't care to eat or drink much, but when he's not hiding, he is all about aggressively getting petted and purring. It doesn't help that I have to catch him to give him his antibiotic I will be on the phone to the vet on Monday if this hasn't cleared up !

My cat was just given an injection of Buprenorphine. I was told because of her continual vomiting and diarrhea, it would offer some relief. She also had to be sedated to get bloodwork. done. i will receive the results tomorrow but she has not slept since Friday. She seems very skiddish and stares into space as if something were there. never again.

Martha, I just logged in here looking for this same info tonight. My 15 y/o male cat just got back late today after re-stitching an eyelid surgery that he managed to scratch out. The vet tech gave me this buprenex to give him orally, but he must have also had an injection during or after the procedure that I wasn't aware if. He's been acting the same as the cats in previous comments - dilated pupils, agitated, rubbing against EVERYTHING and just won't calm down. I won't be giving him more because he had nothing for pain after the first surgery, just antibiotics, and was better than this. I hope your cat makes out OK! It sounds like the only relief from this is time.

I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who shared their experiences.
