Most cats are in the 10 to 12 pound range.... but greg and arnold would have to loose 1/2 of their body weight to get to 10 to 12 pounds.

I dont think greg is overweight. He is just a little tank, literally rectangular, same width from head to butt and amazingly thick and solid. He doesnt even eat that much.

Arnold is larger than greg, both taller and longer with a broader head and larger paws. I would like him to loose 2 pounds. He did drop from 24 to 23 pounds recently, possibly from spending so much (supervised) time outdoors. I do watch their consumption and they mainly eat very low calorie veruwa paw lickin chicken. Their double fur coats give them a very wide look. The vets have never said the boys were overweight.....mainly just marveled at arnolds size......but i want 2 pounds off him.

I love the photo of them looking at each other from the chairs! Very cute! It’s clear that they have that thick undercoat. My Smokey has the same type of fur. She’s the same color and also a fluff kitty. Her outer coat is fine but the under fur is very think and she requires lots of brushing. She is at her max weight and I do have to watch her intake in order to prevent future issues. She is 12 and reaching an age where arthritis and mobility problems can begin. She still likes to run around with the other kitties and I hope to keep that going! I think we need a giant hamster wheel! Kitty tread mill!

hi all,

When I adopted Juliette a few years ago, she was 2 years old and 10.5/11 lbs. Now she’s 5.5 years old and 13.2 lbs. The vet does want her to lose a little weight, and we’ve been working on it.

I’m just curious, based on pictures what are y’all’s impression? Does she seem very overweight? She’s also naturally a bigger-framed girl judging by her length and paws.

She is a pretty girl...n cute

All my boy cats weighed more than 12lbs, most hit 15 and were lean racing machines.

Most of the girls held between 10-13. His vet is crazy. Though when we first got cats, back when the old queen was alive, the vet said cats were supposed to weigh 4 lbs.

Just wanted to add that depending on how dense your kitties coat is, it can create an illusion of more weight than you think. Your cat's coat reminds me of mine. It looks short but it's actually pretty long and dense. I thought he was too fat but when I shaved him down, it's like he lost 3 pounds visually. He doesn't look overweight at all anymore and has quite a lovely shape. So, I guess just keep that in mind...

That’s very true! I only have one light weight cat and she is just very tiny all over. Delicate and petite. Her kittens all grew up to be huge! If I just shaved the tail of my Bonjure, he would definitely lose weight! He’s part Maine Coon and a big boy in general. He’s heavy but really mostly in the back half. The lineage has a lot to do with cat build.

Oh, hell, Ailish is a smallish cat and she looked underweight at 7 pounds. The vet wants her at 8-10 and she's at 9 now. 4? That's just crazy.

I thought it was sort of crazy too even then. My parents cat came in at 13 or so pounds and he was lean. Saw on Dr. Jeff this morning that an 8 month old should be 5-7 pounds. I think that's right. I don't really think cats are that much bigger than they were.

We did have one who reached 4 pounds and never grew. She died at
four years from the type of anemia that comes on in a matter of hours. Took her to the vet the moment she seemed off a day later it was over. I've always wondered if she'd had more to her would she have had more time to fight it.

She could stand to lose a few pounds since she seems more tummy than waist. :) I only say this because of what the few extra pounds might be doing to her heart. Otherwise, I think she is as cute as a button.
