I wonder if anybody ever tried just regular potting soil. I know somebody who's cat killed all their plants from digging them up and peeing on the survivors. Wonder if Miracle Grow would work. Good for your plants and good for your cats! Fancy dirt in a pretty bag. That would be a fun experiment. You could even mix in a bunch of used grass seed and make a green carpet.
When I had a surplus of sawdust I mixed that into the cat littler just to try it out. It worked OK. It sticks to wet stuff so it kind of encapsulates things.
By the way, I am very allergic to grass pollen, it has not been a fun year.

I used dirt (really dark dirt) when Demi first came here, since I wasn't expecting him and didn't have any litter. I didn't like it, it made his feet all dirty and had to dump it quite often.

You really don’t want to try that unless your cat refuses all other. Messy, tracks dirt everywhere. I would try play sand before dirt.

I've been using the 100% Dust Free Arm&Hammer Slide
The granules are coarser, a lot less dust but doubt it's 100%
No clue what it's made out of.

That Frisco is way cheaper might have to try that.
I'm paying like 18$ for 28 lbs at Target

I am sticking with arm&hammer slide. No tracking, clumps good, slides right out, doesn't smell though some people say it does. Maybe they are not putting enough litter in and having tops on the boxes can make the smell worse.

It is a lot less dust that's for sure
I'm seeing others labeled 100% dust free now too.
I don't smell anything!

Personally I use arm and hammer slide. It wont disappoint you. It clumps readily and doesn’t track because of it. Cleaning the litter box is also a breeze. As with all litters scoop it every day for best results.

I use a pine horse bedding from Fleetfarm. I tried like, EVERY kind of litter from world's best to walnut to paper pellets and my cats were game to poop in anything so for bonus less environmental impact/bag size/price I stick to the wood pellets. Just use the scoop to shake the loose stuff into a trash bag and a bit of poking about to get the poops after to maximize useage. I like the piney smell too and I usually mix in baking soda after.

I have some weird compulsion now and I can't even buy clay clumping litter. Plus I am sensitive to the dust and strong fragrances. Feline pine though what a joke! I work at a dollar tree so when anyone buys stuff indicating new cat I tell them to try out the pellet litter at fleet.... the shelter uses it too.

I'm tempted to try the non-clumping pine pellets from Tractor Supply, but I'm nervous to make the jump. We have 3 cats and 2 jumbo litterboxes (I know, I know, but they had a third and rarely used it, so...) so that seems like a lot of litter to be dumped every week.

I guess the priorities for me would be, clumping, I despise pellets, and I have a litter robot so good clumps are a must. Honestly I've used Dr. Elsey's and it didn't clump well enough for me. Next priority would be unscented, no real odor, and little to no dust. After that would be little to no tracking, followed by environmentally friendly. I purchased okocat supersoft, but haven't used it yet. I am not sure I love clay litter due to environmental impacts, and arm and hammer slide doesn't have an unscented option that I could find.

I read the smart cat's site, and didn't see anything about it not causing allergies for people. I didn't feel ready to risk it for that litter. I'm so allergic to grass I get hives from sitting on it so grass seed seems like a dangerous game I am unwilling to play.

I haven't seen unscented either. Only a tiny bit gets on the floor. Not nearly enough for tracking. The odor goes away after its pored. It is almost dust free and scoops easy. It helps to put lots in

I do not like clumping litter. It is more work and the litter makes the box all slimy when washing. I prefer crystal litter. The bags are lighter and I can get 10 days out of an 8lb bag of litter. I have 4 jumbo boxes for 7 cats. And it works pretty well. I started using litter box liners recently when I discovered they've come out with thick plastic liners. I also put a puppy pad down in the box before putting in the liner and adding the litter. It makes changing out the litter a breeze. I just pull up the liner bag, sinch it closed and put another one back in and add clean litter. If the puppy pad has pee on it because someone scratched a hole in the liner, I'll replace it. If there is a lot of pee, I'll go ahead and give the box a quick wash. I like the Vibrance (formally Mimi Litter) that Walmart sells. It's a small crystal that is easy on the paws and it isn't overly perfumed.

Thank you! I have the litter robot though so clumping is a priority, but if I ever get rid of it crystal seems like a good choice.

My cats don’t use a litter box anymore but when they did we used catsan. It clumped together nicely and didn’t create ant odor. Also it wasn’t that expensive and was readily available at shops.

What do they use instead of a litterbox?
