I usually spray the original unscented skin so soft on me to repel the mosquitoes as I found it works a thousand times better than Off. But I never had these cats before, especially the 2 that lick me (last summer I was inside healing from a fracture). I did a search about diluting the SSS on cats but what about on me before coming in contact with mosquitos? I tend to get blood poisoning and trips to ER if I get bit which of course if that happened I can't care for the cats. Do I need to thoroughly wash off the application before going outside or should I put on long sleeves and a glove so the cats don't ingest. Sorry if the question is stupid. The only cat I had before was an indoor cat that would run back inside scared if a leaf blew by her so tening to outdoor cats is all new to me.

Hi MoonstoneWolf !

I would never allow any cat to lick any part of me onto which I had applied any kind.....of anything.

We have absolutely no way of knowing what is in products such as the one you mentioned, 'Skin So Soft'. These formulas (formulae?) are proprietary......ask until you're blue in the face, but, you'll never be told nor find out!

If memory serves me correctly, someone who posts prolifically here once suggested actually using that on a cat.......I just about went through the roof when I read that! I found it outrageous......but, more importantly, completely uninformed. (unsurprising, really)

My suggestion would be to wear long sleeves and to just keep the mosquitos off your hands.

Well, perhaps those folks know more than I.

A lot of folks say a lot of things...........

Ultimately, it is you who determine what you will do.

Can you provide links to the threads where you saw the product recommended? The mods have been looking and none of us can recall mentioning this product, nor can we find any threads where we mentioned it.

Hi. Sorry I didn't get back sooner. Here are some links I saw it mentioned:

Flea Control For Cat Who Is Being Harness-trained

2 Year Old Cat That Has Become Boney Except For His Belly

Dealing With Fleas

There are pages more on search (skin so soft) but just these few are links I saw it mentioned (diluted with water of course).

I'm asking because in the span of 5 minutes I had killed 10 mosquitos that landed on me and visions of being rushed to ER to save my life keep running through my head. They are a danger in my area this year because of the one year non stop rain and floods.

If I'm not mistaken, I think Furballsmom Furballsmom mentioned it in "Dealing With Fleas".

Hi!
There are some current threads,
Search Results for Query: Fleas | TheCatSite

I only apply a tiny amount of diluted original Avon skin so soft to the back of his neck when my boy scratches more than a couple consecutive times, which is rare. That gets rid of them on him, I personally don't do anything else but I'm in the minority, I think.
I was going to try it but I'm not sure what's in it. We used to use on vacations to Jamaica for fleas and other insects.

Just don't let the cats lick you if you apply it on yourself. My dad uses bug dope, the nasty chemical kind, but he doesn't let the cats lick him.

Is there a safer bug repellent then? I'm just now getting Shaman to lick the cat food gravy off my finger, and yet the mosquitos of course would not be on me if the cats were indoors (naturally. Sorry for stating the obvious). I'm just wondering what else I can do to avoid trips to ER. I hate to not be with the cats just because of this weather tragedy here.

On the upside, the SSS is spray on so I can totally avoid the hands

I see the posts now. They were all made by one person, and were in reference to flea control, not mosquitos. The member also put it on the back of kitty's neck where he couldn't reach it to lick. I'm not sure this really answers your question about whether it's safe for kitties to lick. I would err on the side of caution and say "no."

True. I was just getting her comfortable with me touching her is all. Shaman is a cat I have to work slowly with. She isn't as fast to trust as her littermate and best friend is of me.

Ok thanks. What about making a paste of that di earth whatever it's called to apply to my skin. I hate to miss out on taming the rest of these cats because of something like a trip to ER due to mosquito bites. Shaman isn't as trusting as her best friend/littermate Treasure is of me and so each step with her is a slow one which I consider licking the cat food gravy off my finger a big step for her.

Upon researching DE (when I was using it), adding water makes it not effective. It has to be dry. I applied it onto my cat dry and his hair started falling out.

Ok thanks. There has to be something out there. I refuse to let this come between me and playing with the cats. Even if I have to take shots beforehand.

Seems that catnip is effective (or so my search just pulled it up) against mosquitos. Of course Treasure will never let me come inside. lol

Hi!
The diatomaceous earth (food grade) might dry out your skin but it could be worth a try, or you could have gloves on when you apply the spray-on sss which would help to keep it off of the skin on your hands. I think you have a few options, you could even look into fingerless gloves if you decide to go the long sleeve/gloves route for when you're outside instead of applying something to your skin..

Sure but isn't that just as toxic to the cats as the SSS?
No. I apply it topically to areas on my cat that fleas like to hide and bite (neck, armpit, inner thigh). I have never heard of it being toxic. I use organic cold-pressed coconut oil.

The lauric acid is what kills them apparently. I tried it and it works. Might work for other insects too.
