Maybe do an online fundraiser for a little laptop or tablet? I'd think the funds could be raised very quickly for something like that. It would really solve a lot of logistical problems re: the cards and visits.
I have got a Fire 7 that I would be pleased to donate. PM me for further discussion.

Some happy news here for a change.

My husband and I celebrated our 50th-54th anniversaries with a dinner shared with a dozen wonderful friends. We never got around to celebrating before.

We held it at a Mexican restaurant known for its fajitas. They went way above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. We shared a private room with one other group and our servers were spot-on. We had queso, the bigger plates of fajita nachos I've ever seen, and equally enormous platters of chicken and beef fajitas, perfectly cooked.

We got an incredible cake from Costco. It was a full half-sheet. We chose chocolate. It was filled with chocolate mouse, a full two pounds! And plenty of chocolate buttercream on top in a latticework pattern with roses. I'd gotten some artificial flowers in Mexican colors to go on it, but our resident poltergeist, Harrigan, hid them. Robert stayed up to cut individual 50 and 54 numbers out of foam board and paint them yellow and orange. Then he forgot to put them on the cake. It didn't really matter since people rarely notice the appearance of the cake, just the flavor. That cake was absolutely delicious!

It was an incredible time with all these precious friends. It's s something we won't ever forget.

Keep me in the loop.
I will and thank you for your generous offer. I sent her a message, but depending on what's going on today, she may not respond for a while. She said they're running all the tests and scans again to make absolutely sure that nothing was missed and nothing has changed. They're being very careful.

Alicia88 Alicia88 Very hopeful news update and very good that one of the doctors has seen this before. It may help in treating Shane.
Hoping catspaw66 catspaw66 can help with that generous offer. I've yet to know of any kid who doesn't want to be connected to the outside world.
And that is a wonderful celebration, Mother Dragon Mother Dragon -- a friend of mine threw a big party for her mom's birthday a few years back and she had a chocolate Costco cake, so I know firsthand how good they are. Really, really decadent. Anyone needing something like this couldn't do better IMHO.

Shane's currently in surgery to have a shunt put in to drain the fluid around his brain. After that, they're going to try to shrink the tumor with medication and radiation.

The meeting with Mitch went well. Awkward, but I think that's to be expected when you're 30 years old and meeting your father for the first time. We did the cheek swab and the samples are on their way to a lab. I suppose it'll take 2 days or so to get there and they say results will be available 2 business days after that. Though, after seeing him in person and looking at a side by side pic, I'm not sure a DNA test is necessary. I can see a lot of similarities. Either way, DNA doesn't lie and I really want to be certain.
He seems like a very nice guy. John liked him, too. They seemed to get along very well. I think it will be nice getting to know him and developing a relationship of some sort.

Very nice-looking man, and I can see familial similarities, whether they're real or not ;) Your kiddo just gets cuter and cuter, doesn't he? :)

You two look more alike than my sister and I.
Although my mom and dad insist we're blood, I wonder...

How does one report a GoFundMe thing? I saw an article on a local news web site about a homeless couple whose dog was beaten and now needs vet care. A GoFundMe thing was set up with a goal of $1000. The article says that the couple tried to take the dog to a vet clinic in a specific neighborhood but were turned away because they didn't have an appointment. So they made an appointment for sometime this week. Here's the problem: the only vet clinic in that neighborhood is a low cost one and sees pet owners on a walk in basis. No appointment is needed at all. Office visits are free and additional services are at a reduced cost. The clinic web site states all this. Clearly this homeless couple just wants the money :bat: Their GoFundMe page currently states a goal of $2000 with $1325 raised so far.

I just emailed the writer of the article just asking her to double check the couple's story and the clinic they tried to take their dog to because the only vet clinic in that neighborhood is a walk in one. I also suggested that she tell readers to donate funds directly to the dog's vet bills at the clinic instead of through GoFundMe because who knows what the couple will do with the money.

Good idea. I work in social services/basic needs and I hate to say it but you do get certain people who do want to work the system for all it is worth (it's not who you think). *ahem* Anyway, I'm off my soapbox and it's back to your regularly scheduled program.

I finally have spent almost a whole week 100% pain free from this rib injury. Now I just need to keep an eye out for whiplash from getting rearended on Friday. Sigh.

On the plus side that means assistant supervisor duty for anything archaeology related, so I got to break in a rookie shovelbum at the archaeology dig today! *cracks knuckles* He found out real quick that chasing builders trenches along giant dry stone walls is definitely not the fortune and glory Indiana Jones promised.

That is scandalous. Maybe report it to GoFundMe which is owned by Facebook.
But maybe they got the facts wrong because of not knowing how to post it and their dog really does need help? Tough call.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't see your second post

I only posted a comment to the article saying that what the couple said about needing an appointment was questionable because the clinic was a walk in. A "friend" of the couple slammed my comment saying that the couple did go to that clinic in yesterday morning ("friend" said he / she had to watch the couple's stuff so it wouldn't be stolen off the streets. Assuming that means the "friend" is also another homeless person since the article kind of implied the couple were new to the area) but the clinic was too busy to see them and then went on this whole thing about veterinary care and internal injuries and adrenaline and how I knew nothing about veterinary medicine. Um, so you do????

The male half of the couple also responded in general saying that he and his GF were not drug addicts or anything and really needed the money for the dog's care.

Should I point the couple to the SPCA which offers pet care assistance to those in need? Or just not get into this issue anymore? I feel bad for the dog but the whole article seems really sketchy to me.

But maybe they got the facts wrong because of not knowing how to post it and their dog really does need help? Tough call.
The couple didn't write the article. Someone from that news web site did. Maybe the writer is just really bad at getting facts together and writing an article that makes sense. Who knows?

EDIT: If the dog has internal injuries as the "friend" claims, the low cost vet clinic can't diagnose the exact problems because they don't have the necessary equipment. The couple would need to be referred to a full service vet hospital for X rays and whatever else is needed and it does't seem like they have been, or a least not from the sketchy article and the comments. Too many red flags here:nono:
