My cat was diagnosed with struvite crystals and FLUTD/FIC caused by stressed at the beginning of this month. Long story short, our vet recently suggested we try 10 mg hemp oil twice a day to help with anxiety and inflammation. Has anyone used hemp oil with their cat?

Thanks in advance!

Hemp oil (CBD derived from hemp) is one you have to be careful with. If you get the right product and figure out the right doseage it can work wonders. If you get the wrong version and dose incorrectly it can do nothing, at best, or cause more problems, at worse.

First of all, if you live in an area where marijuana is legal I encourage you to find a dispensary with pet CBD oil. Make sure you know the carrier oil and you want a 20:1 ratio (CBD to THC). I use one that is 20:1 with olive oil made in California to the same standards as human CBD products. But it is only available in California. It has worked wonders for the arthritis in one cat and anxiety of the other. It's does take a good month to get to full effectiveness but I am seeing results.

If you don't live in a place where marijuana is legal, make sure you are getting a full spectrum product and know where the hemp was grown AND processed. You do NOT want a grown or processed in China product. If you are in the US, Kentucky grown is supposedly the best because of agriculture restrictions. But as long as you do your research into where it is grown and processed you should be fine. Also pay attention to what oil they use and anything else they may add into the mix.

All of that in mind, I've had good results. I started at half the recommended dose once a day. I actually went down some to a fifth the recommended because it seemed too much at first. My boy, who had the arthritis, was a little hyper and wobbly. We are not at 2/5 of the recommend dose once a day for him and he has marked improvement. My girl gets 1/2 the recommend dose for her size once a day. We are going to twice a day but hers is for anxiety which she has shown such improvement that we are upping it to see if we can get better results.

While I have faith in your vet, the 10mg seems a little high based on my research. My boy is 14.5 pounds and he gets 0.2 ml which contains a little less then 1 mg of CBD. There is some potency differences between hemp and marijuana CBD oils. Hemp is missing some of the components that marijuana has; marijuana based CBD is the one used by humans and in the studies being done. So that may account for the higher doseage but I would start low and slow if you do try it. Also, since your vet is recommending a specific mg you'd want to make sure whichever oil you get specifies how many mg of CBD per unit of measurement to make sure you don't do too much.

Is CBD oil and hemp oil the same? I've seen a lot of posts about CBD oil when the subject of hemp oil is brought up.

The terms are used sometimes interchangeably but there is a difference between them. Although, if you are in a place where marijuana is illegal, hemp and CBD oil are the same thing. From this website, Hemp Oil: Everything You Need To Know

"1. Hemp oil.
This product has been extracted from the stalk of a hemp plant, mainly for its CBD content. Legally, it must have less than 0.3 percent THC.

2. Hemp seed oil.
This is oil that has been extracted from hemp seeds. Hemp seed oil contains little to no THC or CBD and is instead extracted for its healthy fatty acid profile.

3. CBD oil.
In states where cannabis is legal, CBD oil can be made from Cannabis sativa or hemp and is made from the whole plant, including the flowering portion. In states where cannabis is illegal, CBD oil must be made from hemp, which means the stalks of the hemp plant.

4. Cannabis oil.
This oil is derived from the Cannabis sativa plant that can contain both CBD and THC in varying concentrations. The clear drawback of cannabis oil is that it cannot be purchased outside of a state that has not legalized the sale of cannabis. Cannabis oil can also contain higher amounts of THC, which could be problematic for those not looking for the psychoactive effects of cannabis oil."

When you are talking medical research and studies, they almost always mean CBD oil from marijuana and not hemp. Which confuses the issue because people claim the same medicinal benefits from hemp oil and marijuana derived CBD oil. However, the chemical compositions are different and saying marijuana derived and hemp derived CBD oils are the same is like saying that different octane gasoline's from different states are the same. There are basic chemical level differences that could impact the performances; which is why I mention paying attention to quality, source and specifics.

Thanks. There's so much information out there! And I want to make sure I buy something that I'm comfortable with giving my cat. We have a few dispenseries here so I may look into that too.

If you have access to dispensaries, go in and ask them about pet marketed products; most products for humans aren't safe for cats due to added ingredients or too high THC. You'd just have to check about the oil used but those products will likely be safer, have higher quality and be more potent then anything you can get online. Just start really low and make sure the ratio is 20:1 or lower (25:1 for example). But I've found staff at the dispensary are generally very knowledgeable about what they sale.

Your profile lists your location as San Francisco. There’s an app (also website) called Weedmaps that you can use to locate VetCBD near you. That’s the CBD oil I would recommend.

You can read more about it on their website at VetCBD.com

I have tried the Care By Design oils which give me a wider range of ratios. Unfortunately the carrier is coconut oil (MCT) which doesn’t agree with my Krista. Select is another oil brand but they also use an MCT carrier. They also flavor some of their oils so avoid those for kitty. I don’t have any experience with the other pet formulas. Many of them use MCT or their dosage was inappropriate for my small cat.

You’re in CA right? I still recommend sourcing your CBD from a dispensary. You can use VetCBD’s website to find one near you that carries VetCBD.

Thank you, everyone! I'm still researching before I make a decision what to try. I am currently between these 2 products: CBD Hemp Oil 330 for Sale - 100MG Active CBD Oil - Pet Releaf and HolistaPet - CBD Pet Tincture 150mg/300mg/600mg | HolistaPet

I don't know if my vet would be able to provide a suggestion but would it be worth asking?
Pet Releaf uses an MCT carrier oil which may not agree with your cat. MCT also doesn’t taste that great.

HolistaPet uses Hempseed oil carrier. I’m not sure your cat will derive any benefit from that as cats need their essential fatty acids in preformed states from animal sources.

Two people on this thread can vouch for VetCBD.

I'd agree with going to a dispensary since you have access and getting your CBD there. Hemp based CBD is great for people who don't have access to dispensaries; please no one else be discouraged from trying if you only have hemp CBD access. But... If you have access there is more benefit to getting the dispensary version. At the very least, go in and talk to the staff. Trust me, they are super friendly and knowledgeable.

But... Those two options do look good for hemp based CBD oil. Just be mindful of the oil because some cats do react to the coconut oil one.

There's an FLUTD group on FB and many members use CBD oil. The recommended brand is Charlotte's Web (Olive oil, unflavored). Start with 1 drop for a week and then go up from there.
