Hi Everyone - Wondering what everyone's thoughts or experiences with Rescue Remedy for Pets are? I have an anxious 3yr old female long haired cat that is peeing outside the litter box. She's in good health so I know bad health is not the reason. I trapped her from outdoors when she was only about 4-6 months old. She stayed with my niece for about a year and used the litter box for both #1 & #2. When she came back to live with me, she was also using the litter box for both at first. I had kept her in a separate part of the house away from the other cats while letting them smell each other under the door. I spent every day with her so she would grow to trust and bond with me. She has been part of the family cat group for over a year now. She is friendly and gets along with 4 of the 5 other cats. She stays away from the one she is fearful of. She is Spayed. She is the youngest and has been with me for about 1 1/2 years. I have been battling this for quite some time and have been able to get her to at least pee on the wee wee pads near the litter box for about a year now. Someone suggested Rescue Remedy to relieve her of stress/anxiety which may be causing her to not pee in the litter box. She does use the litter box for #2. Any comments are welcome.

Has she been to the vet to make sure there's not a medical reason for inappropriate peeing? If it hurts to pee a cat will often associate it with the litterbox and start peeing elsewhere.

I'm a fan of Rescue Remedy. I find it takes the edge off when my pets are experiencing stressful situations such as the 4th of July or visitors they aren't fond of. My favorite part about it is that you can't overdose it. If it's just a regular kind of stressful day, such as with a loud visitor, I usually do 4 drops in the morning and 4 drops in the late afternoon. On the 4th of July, I usually give 4 drops on a treat (Stella and Chewy Freeze Dried Raw works well for us) around 5 pm, another 4 drops around 7 or 8 pm, and some more around 11 or midnight when it's starting to sound like everyone is getting ready for their finales. If people are being jerks and letting them off right next to our house I'll give it every 1.5-2 hours.

You'll have to experiment with how much and how often your cat needs it. Too much makes my cat drowsy (not always a bad thing) and too little doesn't do anything. There are other calming products you could use with Rescue Remedy such as Feliway which is a plugin.

Although some people swear by Rescue Remedy, I've never seen it or any of the other Bach Flower Remedies make a difference, unlike Feliway (diffusers) or Zylkene. We've had a lot of success with the latter at the shelter, though it does take a couple of weeks for the effect to be seen.

I really prefer Composure or Zylkene to Rescue Remedy. I find RR barely takes the edge off. I do find that using a mixture of other flower essences helps over time. Yet you must find the right mixture as well as give it 4-6 weeks.

Zylkene on the other hand works in a few days. Composure too. I prefer the liquid as it can be mixed into wet food and you can double the dose safely for a period of time.

Please be sure to have a vet check first. She could have a UTI that is causing her pain. Health check first then if all clear work on the behavior.
