Have you tried it?
We went to a vet 10 days ago and I think he got fleas. Our kitty is a rescue cat so I cannot touch him yet to see close. But he has been scratching a lot lately.
I called to the vet and they recommend to use Revolution.
His foster lady uses Cheristan. I've read about it and the reviews are horrible, lots of death.
Have anybody used any of these before?
I wish I could just wash him and do it naturally but the kitty is still scared of hands... It was very hard to take him to a vet.
I will keep watching him for a couple more days and try to look onto his neck for signs. Any other advice on fleas? It's been a while since we had cats and cat problems...
Thank you! :)

I've used it before but not for a long time. I had a cat with severe allergies to whatever was in the flea ointment so I couldn't treat her with it.

Check your cat for flea poop if you can. If there is a lot, you probably have an infestation. But if it were just 1 or 2 adults, you might be able to get away with just picking them off and cleaning the area.

But since your cat is new and not used to you yet, the ointment would be the best and quickest soluation to your flea problem.

As much as I don't want to, I've always used Advantage. It's Advantage II now. I don't use it on a monthly basis, all year round but it's necessary some parts of the year. I really hate the thought of applying any type of topical toxin, but it is what it is. I haven't tried other topicals because the Advantage has always worked for us for over 20 years and it hasn't made either of my cats sick in that period of time.

Advantage doesn't work by absorbing into the bloodstream of the cat and poisoning the fleas when they bite the cat. But I think it's unavoidable that some of the chemicals are still going to get into the cat through the skin. I haven't used Revolution or Frontline, again, because we haven't had an issue with Advantage and the other two are unknowns to me. I just dont want to chance a bad reaction.

The way some of these new ones work by absorbing into the bloodstream and killing the fleas when they have their blood meal ... that just personally scares the hell out of me (probably do to an early 1980's nightmare experience with, what was then, an off label use of Proban on one of my cats).

I have used revolution. I’m currently using Bravecto. It only gets applied every three months. I stagger when I apply it to two of my cats ( I don’t put any on my third cat who has had reactions to all the topicals I have tried). My cats are strictly indoors. I also live in Florida and we need to treat for fleas yearround. Many topicals are no longer effective here. Some people may not want to use something that remains for 90 days but so far this has worked for me.

Huh. I didn't know that some topicals worked differently like that. I'll have to do some research. :eek2:

I am in NC, so I did have to use topicals year round as well. I always used Advantage multi on Angel, so it took care of heartworms as well. I never had any problems. The only thing I hated about it, is that it had that chemical smell for a while, so he'd try to lick it off, so I'd put it a little higher, to make sure he couldn't get to it. I also didn't like how it made his fur look oily in that spot after applying it. It did work well though.
When I had Sammie, I also used it.
Then a friend/ clients cat passed away, & she have me 3 months left of what she used from her vet. I forget the name of it, but since I hadn't heard of it, I emailed my vet to ask if it was ok to use it on her first. She said it was just the generic of Revaluation, & yes, we could use it. Well, I ended up liking it better, because it didn't have that chemical smell, so she left it alone, & didn't look oily either. It worked as well. I think it was also cheaper. I got a good deal on it when I continued using it from 1-800-Pet Meds. I think I paid under $100 for 6 months, on sale,
( maybe $80?) vs/ would've been $130. At the vets!

The fleas where I am are aggressive this year and they started up so early. The Advantage isn't working anymore. Picked some up from the vet and I can still see them and Felix is still scratching.

I'm going to have to do things the old fashion way and clean my house like I'm cleaning for parvo and physically pick fleas off of everyone.

Have you tried it?

How is it going with the fleas now? What did you decide and are you seeing improvements? Is kitty less scared?

I don't know the exact mechanisms of action but Bravecto and Revolution both absorb through the cats skin into their systems. There may be others that do as well, I'm not sure. I'm not saying that they aren't safe to use. All the topicals personally worry me. I'm just deathly afraid of any of them that are designed to work by absorbing into the system through the skin. Same applies with me for oral flea products. I was worried sick when the vet gave my cat Capstar when he had his surgery and overnight stay. It was part of their requirement/policy.

Has anyone heard of the deadly results of Bravecto?!! Do not use ! It is killing dogs and cats, just google it! Any topical that last 3 months is extremely toxic! Its a poison and you should not apply to your pets!! My cat almost died from one dose! Please read up about it!

All flea preparations make me nervous, but at times you have to use them. Out here in LA I do not use any of them on a monthly basis but have used both Revolution and Advantage with no serious issues. I have never done an oral flea med, and not because of anything in particular. You know not to use Hartz....

I've been using Revolution on my senior kitty for around a year and a half. She doesn't have any negative reaction to it. It makes her fur feel weird for a day or two after application but that's about it. She's an indoor only cat and my dog is on flea meds so she doesn't have much opportunity to come into contact with fleas. So far any she may have picked up at the vet or on a leashed walk in the yard don't survive long enough to be noticed.

I normally use Revolution for my indoor cats and the feral colonies we take care of. However, my vet recently recommended Catego which is fairly new, very inexpensive (Walmart, Amazon and Chewy) and touted to work wonders on Florida fleas!

I think the Catego may have been what I saw recently at Walmart. I didn't look closely at the label, I figured it was just a generic version of Advantage or Frontline. Looking at the link, I'm seeing that it combines the Fipronil that is in Frontline and the Pyriproxyfen that is in Advantage and also adds Dinotefuran (I had to look this one up). Pyriproxyfen (Precor) is a growth regulator. Fipronil and Dinotefuran (a nicotinoid like imidacloprid [the adulticide in Advantage]) are both adulticides that work by disrupting the CNS of the fleas/ticks/lice. But I'm curious as to why they include two adulticides? I wonder if it's to address possible issues of resistance?

The understanding I got from my vet is that it isn't sold in the Walmart stores, only online.

According to my vet, the answer is a resounding "YES!"
