I took my cat to the vet because she had some changes in appetite but there were no other symptoms.
Today the results of a blood test returned and the vet said that one of her liver values was slightly elevated. I don't really understand this but she said there were 3 values and 2 were normal but one was slightly raised. The vet said that Miss Milo might have ingested a toxin which is a complete mystery as she is an indoor only cat and she has no access to plants, human food or anything that would harm her. Maybe someone who visited had something on the bottom of their shoe. I don't know what to think. I am taking her back to the vet Friday week to re test bloods.
Has anything like this happened to you?

Hello MissMiloPuss MissMiloPuss , is there any way that you can call your vet back tomorrow, and ask to explain what actual liver enzyme is elevated and what she actually is looking for to diagnose Miss Milo?

You did say that Miss Milo had changes in appetite? Was she not eating at all?

Your vet may just be wanting to make sure that Miss Milo's values return to normal.

I initially presented her when she had not eaten anything apart from a couple of treats. I took her in straight away and she had a slightly raised temp. The vet gave her metacam to reduce temp and Mirtazapine to stimulate appetite. I was asked to return 48 hours later if not back to normal. In that 48 hours she ate enough food but would only eat one particular food which wasn't normal for my cat. We returned and then she had the blood test. Her temp had returned to normal though. Her appetite is back to normal now.
Thanks for your reply

I'm so glad that she is eating.
There are things that you can ask your vet about, called SamE and milkthistle, but when my previous rainbow cat was ill, he was also jaundiced...which is not what your cat has.

Even though your cat is indoor, could she have gotten fleas off of someone's shoes, or eaten any human medication?
Most likely, your vet just wants to keep an eye on her liver, and re-check, to make sure.
It does sound like the vet is very thorough, and you also sound like a very attentive cat guardian. I hope Miss Milo's test results come back all well on friday.

Can you ask the vet which enzyme was elevated? One of them can elevate with the stress of a vet visit while another can elevate with inflammation anywhere in the body, not necessarily the liver itself. That she was running a fever could be reason enough for one of them to be slightly elevated. Did the vet offer an opinion? If her appetite returns to normal after the mirtazapine wears off (up to 72 hours), it might have been just the fever. But...the fever could be an indicator of a problem as well. How old is she? When’s the last time her teeth were checked out? Dental problems can cause a liver enzyme to elevate.

But there are more serious reasons why a liver enzyme might elevate such as a bile duct obstruction.

Without knowing which enzyme was elevated, I couldn’t even fathom a guess at what could have been the issue. Even then, I’m not a vet and can only interpret experience and google results.

Regardless, I think a Friday follow up is a good idea.

Right ok. I will phone the vet. The suggestion that she offered was that Miss Milo may have nibbled on a plant or ate some food dropped on the floor. This isn't possible. She's an indoor cat and I am fully aware of what is and isn't toxic to felines. I don't even have any plants apart from Cat grass I buy from the pet shop. I always take my shoes off before I come into the house but wondered if someone else came in with something on their shoe. It's a mystery
Her appetite is back to normal.
