Hey guys, new member here. :) I've read several threads here about alternatives to foods like Hills Z/D, but most of the advice I've seen doesn't apply, so wanted to start a new thread to see if anybody has experience with this.

I have one cat, probably 3ish years old, called Magpie. (After fostering a bunch of dogs with behavioral issues I wanted to get a "simpler" pet that didn't need to deal with the world outside, lollllll.) We're like 90% sure she has mild feline hyperesthesia (well controlled on gabapentin), she's got whisker sensitivity, and worst, she vomits up her meals very regularly. I'd say at least 3-5 times a week on average, sometimes a lot more, sometimes less.

When I first got her she was on Science Diet from the shelter and I intended to transition her slowly, but she threw up almost every meal. Tried her on premium kibble next to ease transition, also threw that up. Premium human-grade canned, threw up about half the time. I'm amazed she wasn't emaciated when we got her. We tried all sorts of things thinking she just needed to be slowed down as she was initially a gobbler... Added water to the food, fed small meals, fed kibble from puzzle feeders, etc. Nothing fixed the issue. Every time she hadn't vomited for awhile we'd think we had it licked only for her to start up again.

Now before you say feed raw... I am a HUGE proponent of raw feeding and was trying to get her there anyway, was just trying to go slow. So we went right to raw after trying all that other stuff. That's where we got it down to 3-5ish times a week rather than at least once a day. Tried her on every protein we could find.. Chicken, turkey, venison, duck, lamb, beef (which she hates and refuses to eat), even did a couple months on rabbit. Best option we've found was Honest Kitchen, which I thought was weird, because IMO it has way too much vegetable matter in it for a cat, and I also put out Wellness kibble in her puzzle feeders so she can snack between meals (we already feed her 4-5 times a day in small meals, but going too long between meals also seems to set her off, so I try to make sure she has SOME kind of food at all times, now that we've figured out doing strict raw feeding isn't going to help). But even with that she only went to throwing up maybe 1-3x a week.

Saw a new vet because the old one didn't even have any ideas. This one was pretty stumped too, but suggested we treat like it's IBD, though it'd be an unusual presentation because she hasn't had any diarrhea issues this whole time. We're trying her on Hills Z/D, which kills me a little because I have very strong super negative opinions about most of the major pet food brands. :D But I'll feed her whatever's good for her! We're only a few days in so she's still on a mix of Honest Kitchen, the Wellness kibble I've been giving her, and both kibble and canned Z/D. So far so good, but I feel like it's only a matter of time before she starts throwing up again... the Z/D can't possibly have fixed the issue, since she's not on it exclusively yet. I'm going to give it a chance but honestly am not really expecting it to work, and from what I've read it sounds like over time the hydrolyzed food is just not great for them.

Has anyone out there ever had a problem like this with their cat? She is otherwise very healthy, beautiful coat, bright and playful; my vet's only other idea was cancer, and she doesn't feel that's likely given the good state the cat's in. I'm at that point where my only idea for future treatment is for me to invest in a monthly carpet cleaning (that part's just a hilarious pipe dream, I'm super broke) and cry forever. I feel so bad for her, it looks miserable every time she throws up, and it can be tough to keep weight on her. My vet's next suggestion is an ultrasound, which will cost around $800 no matter what vet we go to (we've shopped around), and we just can't afford it, especially since the vet has told us the odds are maybe 1 in 3 that she'll even see something useful. /o\

Also, forgot to mention, we did have a fecal done (it was clean) and a blood panel, which showed only very slightly elevated lymphocytes; both vets felt that was probably just this cat's normal level, since she shows no physical symptoms of lymphoma.

I have two IBD cats, both successfully maintained on KOHA Limited Ingredient Diet canned food. No carrageenan, grains, or potato. www.KohaPet.com. Check it out.

I've tried all the flavors, both the pate and stews. They like them all, but their favorites are the Venison, Kangaroo and Guinea Fowl. No vomiting on any of the KOHA flavors.

KOHA food is not cheap. I first ordered some cans from the company to test out. Now I buy from local pet store at reduced prices.

Also, try a raised bowl. Mine love theirs from www.classycats.com.

If you want dry, i recommend Dr. Elseys chicken. Works great for my cats.

I have one that barfs a lot if he ever gets hungry. Or if he eats too much at one time. Or the kibble is large size. What has worked for him is Tiki cat after dark wet food, twice a day. and i leave Dr. Elseys dry out at all times. These two foods seem to have taken care of his problems. I have been feeding him this way for many months now, and i am shocked if he ever throws up. Not looking for it every day like i was. Best luck to you guys!

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I'm trying to think of ways to elevate her existing bowls just to see if she prefers that; I can't really afford to buy new bowls or anything at the moment, but I can definitely afford to like... raise them up on a box or something. :D Love the idea of those Classy Cat dishes though, I'm probably going to end up with those on my Christmas list this year. :D

I wanted to update on what's up with my cat in case it helps anybody. I was doing some googling on all this and came across Vitality Science and a product they have called Feline Comfort. Going under the theory that maybe this thing would actually work AND I wanted to feed a novel protein in case of food allergies, I also ordered the KOHA food that babiesmom5 recommended (we did the kangaroo pate). The combination of the Feline Comfort and KOHA food caused my cat to almost immediately stop vomiting entirely. INCREDIBLE. (I'm not a paid rep or affiliate for Vitality btw, I was concerned about that bc a lot of info I found about it seemed to be affiliate links, I'm just mentioning it because it actually worked and it's like a freaking miracle.)

Unfortunately after about a week and a half my cat started completely refusing the KOHA food. Like one meal she's gobbling it up, the next she won't touch it. Really weird. Working under the theory that the Feline Comfort was what was doing the job, figuring maybe I could get her back on raw food like I'd prefer, I went and bought a locally-produced chicken-based frozen raw food... and she's done great on it since. I'm a little bit stunned... I was sort of expecting to have to keep her away from every common protein for the rest of her life.

So, she's doing really well the moment, the Feline Comfort is continuing to work. The testimonial I read that convinced me to try the stuff said that basically after the stomach is healed I won't even need to use that anymore, but to be honest I will probably keep her on it (maybe just reducing amount over time bc it's expensive :D). I know it works and don't want to stop giving it and then suddenly have her throwing up again. It's a powder and I just mix it into her food morning and night. She's a little less enthused about the food with the stuff added, but she still eats it just fine.

I've also tried a few other Vitality products; I got a bottle of Luxolite, and they sent me a little sample of Pet Flora probiotics to try. I can't say whether either makes a difference, as I've used them at the same time as the Feline Comfort, but she hasn't had a bad reaction to them either, and I really like the theory behind their probiotic line, so I might continue getting that when I need to reorder the Feline Comfort. I did also try a liquid product of theirs called GI Distress, and I don't think they intended it to CAUSE GI distress, but for my cat it did. It's apparently actually an alcohol suspension which seems nuts to me because AFAIK cats react very badly to even tiny amounts of alcohol. They actually have directions on their site in case you need to burn off the alcohol before you give the treatment to your cat. Kinda bananas. I just don't use that one anymore. But the Feline Comfort has made me a true believer, for sure.

The only caveat to the success is I've found she apparently can't have ANY dry food of any kind. I tried starting to put out a little bit of high-quality kibble again in her puzzle feeders, because I really like for her to have a little grazing available and also to keep her brain occupied (so she sleeps better at night and is less of a little heck-raiser :D). She started throwing up the kibble again, so I took that away, and put out only freeze-dried treats (so things with only one ingredient, and that's the meat that's been freeze-dried). She also throws those up, about 50% of the time. I'm going to try putting out ONLY freeze-dried chicken (since this is the protein she's eating with her raw food, and maybe the problem that's making her throw up is fish or some other protein I'm giving.) What's weird to me is, these freeze-dried foods are essentially exactly what she's eating as her regular meals and keeping down, but it seems like the dried component is what's making it impossible. I don't even know. :D I'll have to see if the single protein freeze-dried works. There are so many things I like for my pets to have (puzzle feeders, clicker training, not having to be fed literally after 3 hours or less...) that just don't work right now because she can't have the slightest bit of dry food.

I have a conference in a few weeks that's local but I'll be gone all day, with nobody else here to feed her, and I'm seriously stressing about how I'm going to make sure she's able to eat. (Having too big a gap between meals has also historically made her throw up.) I think I might put out like... her regular meal, AND some somewhat thawed food, AND some completely frozen food, so that as the colder food thaws through the day she'll be able to eat it. It's the only idea I've got. :-/

Just read your post and I’m so glad she’s doing better!

Cat you have a cat sitter come by to feed her? We use one when we go on vacation and it’s only about $30 for a half hour but you can be sure she will eat the food then. I’m sure there are cheaper ones as well especially since it’s only 1 day.

Are you still using any Vitality Scornce products. I am having trouble finding info and reviews that are not linked to them in some way?
