Hi everyone,
My partner and I adopted a 11 week old kitten about 2 months ago. There have been inappropriate urinating problems from the start (maybe occurring once a week), but they seem to fluctuate and we have realised recently that there's a pattern where she only urinates outside the litter box on weekends. We are at work from 9-5ish Monday to Friday and home more on weekends, although on some days I am home during the week but this doesn't seem to bother her. Can anyone help with why this might be the case? We have 2 litter trays, and are following all instructions we have found on the internet for reducing anxiety. We have also tried Zylkene which hasnt helped. Is there anything we could be doing that is making her stressed?
Thanks in advance for your advice

Where are the litter boxes located? If they're out in the open, you could try putting them in a more "private" area. Are they near your washer/dryer, and do you do most of your laundry on weekends? If so, move them somewhere else where it's quieter.

It sounds like some weekend activity, possibly just having both of you home, is disturbing her when she wants to use the box.

Hi jcat,
Thanks for your reply. We do have one tray in the bathroom near the washing machine, although sometimes she has used the litter box when it's been running so it's a bit confusing. Perhaps we can try moving it somewhere else. Do we need to do this gradually or can we move it in one go?
We thought earlier that she may have some separation anxiety - could us being around make her less likely to leave us to use the tray? She also seems to become more destructive to get our attention sometimes...not sure if they are connected.

Also I should say - she doesn't seem to mind us being around while she's using the litter tray, she will often follow us into the room and then use it straight away (But not always)

You can move the litter tray all at once. Pick her up and place her in it so she knows where the new location is.

At her age she doesn't get much warning of when she needs the box. It's fine when you aren't there, she probably hangs out in the room (s) with the box. But when you're there, she wants to be with you as much as possible which means waiting until the last second to head for the box.

Try putting a box in each room. You don't need a full plastic box at her age. A small cardboard box with the side cut to an easy for her to step over height will do fine.

Is there anything else going on that's different during the weekend? People coming over?

Hi profcat,

The only thing that's different really is that we wake up a bit later (so feeding is about an hour or so delayed) and we are in and out of the house at different times. We don't usually have people over regularly. I guess maybe she sleeps less over the weekend because we are around...But not sure if that would make a difference.
