I have been an anxious wreck all week (I am an anxious person by nature, but Evie's issues have exacerbated it in a huge way). Tomorrow I'm taking her in to get to the bottom of her chin swelling. New vet, much closer to home...the other office I was taking them to basically pissed me off, so I completely switched her (and Emerson and Dexter) over to a new clinic.

Background: Evie had an abscess on her jaw that burst on its own, as well as a swollen submandular lymph node on that side. Old vet gave her an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory. That spot is healed up, but now the tip of her chin is swollen, and the lymph node remains the same (maybe a tad bit smaller). She is acting 100% normal, eats, plays, seeks out attention, has not lost weight, etc. but Google is a dangerous place when it comes to "lump on cat's jaw"....

Please send good vibes that this is nothing major and that we can have our sweet girl back to 100% soon!

Thank you all for your kind words. My husband (not a medical professional) seems to think that she maybe scratched the original abscess (when it originally burst on it own) and sort of "pushed" the infection over to her chin. Lymph node still swollen because there is still infection via the new chin spot. She is currently curled up in his lap, purring, after playing with some toys for a bit. :runningcat::dizzycat:

I think that we can become more anxious about our pets because of their innate dependency on us, their inability to tell us how they really feel or what happened that put them in that state. Sending good thoughts for healing to your baby...remember almost any online source has to tell you the worst so that you don't sue them or under react. I have found that there can be many obscure and treatable conditions out there......

Verdict is in! The vet said it was pretty significant feline acne. He gave her a Convinia shot (she has had that before and has no adverse reaction to it) and some topical ointment for her chin. He said the lymph node was swollen in response to the bacteria from the acne. I can breathe a little easier and the wallet is a little lighter but I'm glad it was nothing major. Everything else looked and sounded good, no fever, weight was roughly the same, etc.

Thank you for that link! He seemed pretty confident that the Convinia and the topical cream would knock it right out and to just monitor it from then on. He said to use human acne pads on her chin once a week once it goes down.

I know you know this, but ceramic and/or glass feeding/water bowls ONLY, and until the acne is gone entirely, rinse with boiling water at least once a day...after each use is preferable. Some say metal, as well, but metal, when scrubbed, can develope little scratches, so I don't trust it entirely.

Oh, good. Like I said, most people feel that stainless is fine, but it can develope tiny scratches where something MIGHT breed, and with a case of feline acne this serious, you don't want to take any chances, especially if you have been really scrubbing those dishes trying to keep them very clean! The slick surfaces of the glass or glazed ceramic bowls means that you can just wash thoroughly, then rinse with boiling water and be sure of sterility!
