I know have five cats in the house due to foster failure, and I'm finding that I have to vacuum a lot to keep up, especially since one of mine is a long-haired grey floof.

I have one large Hoover floor vacuum. Its very powerful, but it's heavy and not very maneuverable. Then I have a small Shop Vac. It's much more portable, but a pain to empty. Ideally, I think I need one that's both maneuverable and easy to empty.

Do you have one that you like?

I seem to accumulate vacuums, but the one I like best for both hard surface and carpeted floors is the Shark Rocket. It’s maneuverable, lightweight enough to get from room to room, has a fairly long cord, is easy to empty, and can also be used as a handheld. I also have a ridiculously expensive Dyson “Animal,” but it’s cumbersome and heavy. It has fantastic suction, but I rarely use it. I recently bought a $29 Eureka thing for quick litter pick up that was a complete waste of money.

I bought an Animal Dyson years ago when we added a dog to our family. I still have it and it works just as good as new.

I have a Shark Professional Navigator Lift Away. Bought it at Costco for $145. It works well. We're pretty happy with it. Talked about getting a Dyson too but didn't since they're incredibly expensive.

One thing I wonder about the vaccuums mentioned in this thread is how easy they are to clean. Particularly the brush roller. Our current vacuum (need to go check what brand) has good suction, is very easy to empty and maneuver, comes with nice hose tools, but the brush gets filled with hair so quick its not even funny and it was designed very poorly and it is really hard to get the brush out and then even harder to remove the hair. It's enough to make me want another vacuum.

I wish there was a vertical shop vac, not with a roller just with the hose still, but having a vertical barrel for easy storage. I think the simplicity and ease of emptying it, the ability to suck up water, litter, fur, hair ect. is awesome but I cant store the big round one in my apartment.

Doesn't Bissell make one especially designed to deal with the beater bar fur problem? I've been watching the ads and wondering.

I have a Shark like yours, too. I like it. It can fit between ding chair legs (no hauling out the chairs for a quick vacuum) and picks up nicely on bare floors. Easy to disconnect the handle to get in corners with the hose end. It sucks up cats toys, too. Just sayin'... I keep Nola's toys in a basket so I go around picking up her pretties before I vacuum.

I never appreciated how little the cats shed (had 8) until we got the Labrador.

I have a Shark Professional Navigator. I love it. The brush isn't easy to clean but I haven't found a vacuum yet that it is easy to do. I had a Dyson Animal and did not like it. When we changed type of carpet (from plush to Berber) it did not handle the new carpet well. I have a houseful of long haired animals - in fact the only being in the house who doesn't have long hair is my husband (he's mostly bald:)).

We used to go through a vacuum a year until we got an Oreck. It has lasted 8 years so far and word great for picking up hair and cat litter.

I have the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser for litter and dried food. For wet messes like vomit and hairballs, I have the Bissell Pet Stain Eraser. Both handhelds. They both work amazingly well at spot cleaning. The cleaning up on the dry vac is a snap. No spring-loaded canisters that explode their contents out in a cloud of dust (looking at you, Dyson!) and no stupid handheld exhaust fan pointed back at my face (again looking very angrily at you, Dyson!). I don’t use my uprights as often as maybe I should because the handhelds do a wonderful job at spot cleaning.

I also have a Dyson (mine is a v10 because it was the one on sale when I bought it) and would recommend them in a heartbeat. The price tag may seem steep initially, but its effectiveness and longevity are totally worth it! I used to hate vacuuming because my old vacuum (a knock-off version of iRobot) couldn't pick up everything including cat litter or vacuum corners. Dyson actually made me love vacuuming now because it picks up everything and it's so easy to use!

Honestly I gave up with the upright vaccuum and I just use a shop vac to suck everything up all the hair, litter, ect. without even having to worry about ruining the vaccuum. Its nice because it picks up wrappers and little things too so I dont have to prune the carpet first
