So, how do you deal with Rabies vaccines when/if your cat has a bad reaction to a previous vaccine?

My cat is indoor only, no other animals in the house. He's 12 now and he had his kitten shots except for Rabies vaccine. I squirmed my way out of the rabies vaccine when he was a kitten. But when he went in for surgery to remove a small cyst about 5 years ago, he had to stay overnight and the vet said he had to have a rabies vaccine (and one other, I can't remember which). At any rate, he didn't get sick but developed a mass at the injection site. It grew larger over the course of a few days, stayed the same for a week or so and then slowly decreased in size over the course of a few weeks. The vet saw him weekly, at no charge, to check on the mass until it was gone. But potential cancer was a concern. Thankfully, it turned out ok but it was a scary time.

Fast forward to today and the vet (different vet, same clinic) is pushing to give him another rabies vaccine. I informed him about my cats previous reaction to the vaccine (which should be in his chart) and he was understanding enough but informed me of the potential of quarantine and euthanasia if my cat bit someone and it was reported. He wasn't using the information as a scare tactic, just wanting me to be informed and understand the possibility. Needless to say that my cat left the clinic without another rabies vaccine (vet was "ok" with it).

If he were my cat I would never get him the vaccine again! Sounds too scary. If you must please opt for the 3 year one.

I believe the necessity for Rabies vaccine depends upon state law. This varies from state to state.

I too had a cat years ago which developed a bad reaction to the Rabies vaccine. She was a strictly indoor cat with no exposure. Of course I got the lecture of "what if a bat gets into your house"?

Each year, I sign a waiver which explains the risks etc which I acknowledge. This goes in her chart. I accepted the risks and was never sorry.

Cat never got another rabies vaccine.

Medical exemptions are allowable for humans too. Some people/animals just have bad reactions. But it is true that if there's a bite incident or a wild animal situation, there could be trouble. So the vet has to let you know about that. The chance of that happening is very low though.

If at some point he really needs a rabies vaccine (unlikely), sometimes an injectable antihistamine given before the vaccine can prevent a bad reaction.

Here its the law. They have to have it..But if my cat ever has a bad reaction to it.I would try n find a waiver to sign at vets office to not have to have it under those circumstances. But my cat is totally indoors so that would help..With the waiver...I would think..

One of my cats had a reaction. At the time I was going to a vet that still would vaccinate. She gave him a shot of Benedryl twenty minutes before the shot and he didn't have a reaction again. He was the cat that I did the vet hopping with because of undiagnosed IBD. I finally found a good vet but at that point he had fatty liver. She never vaccinated him because he probably had liver damage.

I think a lot depends on how strict the state is with the rabies vaccination. Technically cats don't have to be vaccinated in Ohio but dogs do.

In North Carolina:it's law...But if my cat ever has a reaction...I would myself ask the vet about a waiver..If VET couldn't answer my question..I would find someone who could..But if the VET can give something to prevent reaction..thats great

I just looked it up and apparently Florida does have an exemption that the Vet can submit.
