My mentor has her vet do the microchips (she said the cost is about $45 per kitten at her vet which is like 3 hours away). My vet charges me $70+ tax per kitten to microchip. Which is quite expensive (he offered to show me how to do it properly should I decide to chip them myself)

I was speaking with a breeder in the US that uses NanoCHIP ID | The NEW Microchip you get 10 microchips for $40 US. Has any one in Canada (I am in Ontario) used these microchips and with good results? It says that they are world wide standard, but I don't know how to ensure that they will be compatible with Canadian scanners. I checked other Canadian microchip companies and most say they are ISO FDX-B compatible, which is the same as the nano chips so I am assuming that they are probably compatible.. But not 100% sure.

Any info or other suggestions on where to purchase bulk microchips in Canada would be greatly appreciated!

I live in Ontario as well and shelters normally do it for a lot cheaper.

For example, in the city of Toronto, you can get your cat chipped for $25.

Edit: This is unrelated to cats but might be helpful. My dog's microchip is registered with PetLink. They have a breeders section on their website. Maybe you could contact them and see if they could help you find cheaper chips.

I will call my local shelter, I never thought about contacting them about microchipping to be honest.

I've contacted a few Canadian companies over the weekend so hopefully some one will get back to me this week :)

Thanks for your replies!

Thanks Graceful-Lily Graceful-Lily I appreciate that!

I got a return email from the company my vet uses, they charge $16.75 per chip or if I am willing to purchase at least 20 a year with a 5 year contract, they cost $9.95 each lol which is a far cry from the $70+ my vet charges to do it!

I'm not sure if this will apply to breeding.
For the cats and kittens I rescue, we use the same microchips that the local shelters use. This is important, since having a chipped animal that can't get read at the shelter could end poorly after a few days. It also helps should a natural disaster occur. Any rescue group that comes into the area will know to have readers that read the local shelter chips.

That makes sense, I looked into the chips my local shelter uses but I emailed the company and they never got back to me.

So I have gone with the same chips my vet uses and they agreed to do it for me and charge me an "injection fee", so I will do that until I get comfortable enough to do it myself.
Thanks for getting back to me!
