I don't understand why anyone would lie about being married. Plenty of people are in unhappy marriages. I had a best guy friend who was in an unhappy marriage, but he didn't want to lose his kids, house, and half his money. He told me all this on day one. Nobody judged him. It's best to be honest always.
Maybe it could be called a Walter Mitty ( a James Thurber short story) complex. I have never kept a secret about being married, because I have never seen a reason for it. In fact, if anything ever happened to Michele, I would probably live out my life alone. Why? Because she is THE ONE. We are two people who were meant for each other, as corny as that sounds. So, what you see on your screen is what you get, nothing more or less, and if that isn't good enough for someone, too bad.

I appreciate that because then we can be respectful. It's easy for a woman to catch feelings if a guy is presenting himself as single, even if he's not.

That's not corny. I'm the same way. I know that once I find The One, I will want to be with him in the great beyond. :)

I certainly can't think of any good reasons. It could be for an extra-marital affair, to prove they can are still attractive to others, they could be narcissistic and controlling and just want to lure people in.

Are they portraying themselves as lonely? They could just be looking for sympathy and attention.

Why would someone pretend that a photo they got off the internet is their family member? I didn't realize how big a turn-off lying is until now, probably because nobody ever lies to me in my real life.

Because of my ex-husband, I am leery about people in general. For example, even when someone posts a game such as a first letter of their first name kind of thing, I would never give my real first letter. If you right click on the picture I use, it does not show up elsewhere. I do not have Facebook, but my husband does and I sometimes get on it. He has 21 friends and a private account. His 21 friends consist of eleven family members, three of our son's fiancee's family members, four of our neighbors, two close friends of our family, and the remaining one is his former fellow employee with whom he has been friends with for more than 10 years.

I have not made a new friend other than my neighbors in 12 years. Even though I may honestly like some people I have met here and have spoken to them in PM, I could never be completely open about who I am, so we will never really be friends.

As for buying something off of Craigslist or something like that, we always arrange to meet in a public space, particularly across from the police station. If they do not agree to that, I do not need what they are selling.

Not exactly the same thing, but my children, one of my sisters, and I are always checking on my ex-husband because it makes me feel safer knowing where he is. And, we need to know his information for child support and the domestic relations court. Once, one of my sister's friends was on a dating site and came across my ex-husband. Mind you, this is a man who abused me so badly that I am disabled because of him and against whom each of my family members, including our two children, are protected by a CPO. Oh, and he cheated on me for at least six years of our marriage. His profile said that he was "just getting back into dating" after an emotionally abusive marriage and that he needed "a good woman to mend [his] fragile heart". It also stated that both his children were over the age of 18 (at the time, our daughter had just turned 15). He was engaged to fiancee Number 2 at the time. (He is on fiancee Number 3 now.)

I have my PMs set so the people I follow are the only ones that can private message me now. People think they can say any rude thing they want by PM. Well they need to think again, because I won't listen to anything insulting anymore. I come on the internet for entertainment, not to have my day ruined.

Amen to that. I am relatively new to social media, if TCS can be so considered. I don't do Facebook, or Twitter, or any of the others. By nature, I don't accept most people at face value, at least not at first. Later on, maybe so. That applies doubly for the internet, where all I can see is what is on the screen. So far, all has gone well, but still I try not to reveal too much, so as not to give anyone a wedge to use against me. I may have been born in the morning, but it wasn't yesterday morning.

That stinks to hear that people will be all rude on pms. As someone who doesn't use that feature much, it doesn't really occur to me. I guess I'm just naïve.

If they are, ignore them and don't reply, copy paste and contact/send it to the mods. I don't know how that all works but they might be able to issue a warning to that member.
Or have some fun and tell them off, since it's not public
All in all I've found TCS to be a pretty nice place.

:flail: guilty. I did tell them off and would do it again. Some people only understand non nornal thinking. And well they got the point loud and clear. I couldn't care less if one is with or without someone. Just don't omit information if one is building a friendship with someone. It is vital information. But what do I know? I've never been married. :dunno:

Mods, Is there some new problem or a resurgence of an old problem that all TCS members need to be made aware of, for their safety? I just noticed this thread getting active again, so I guess I'm concerned. :(

Not that we have been made aware of. In some cases the issues that are being discussed in this thread have happened on other sites or social media platforms.
If anyone is having an issue with a member here on TCS, it's best to alert the Mods, either by private message or by flagging the message you have received, and clicking "ignore" on the member's profile so they will not be able to bother you any more.

Ok. Whew! Yes, I didn't used to use the ignore button as it has its pitfalls, but I have been using it this year for a few reasons. (omg, I've have been here 4 years, tomorrow!)
