Kitten Won’t Use Litter Box Without Me

We got a new kitten a few days ago. He’s 3 months old. He’s a loving and friendly boy & he very quickly became comfortable in our home, however, he won’t use the litter box by himself. He will meow when he wants to go, until I or my fiancée take him and put him in the litter box and watch him do his business or else he won’t go. Anyone have any advice on how to get the little guy to go on his own?

Hi!
Can you try adding a box, and also try some Cat Attract litter? Or even try some unfertilized potting soil in the litter.

What kind of litter box do you have? Open or covered? With high edges? Maybe it’s phisically difficult for him to get there?

hmm if you posted a link, it didn't show up for me. i recommend you get a litter box with a lower side, even if it's just for the time being. It sounds like he's not sure how to get in it. you can set up some obstacle courses to play with him that include short barriers and build his confidence overcoming ledges higher than the sides of the container. Use a toy or treats to get him to jump over. If he doesn't go for that, open faced litter trays might suit his needs better. or you can get trays that are covered that have stairs, you can just remove the cover.

Yeah, that litter box will be nice when he's older, but he's too little for it right now. A low-sided box in plain view will work better.

With a young one like yours I would make sure you have multiple litter boxes so there is always one in the room he is in and I would add in kitten litter attractant. Cheap disposable ones work well for kittens.

If you need to you can use old textbooks to make stairs up to the litter box. Textbooks are heavy enough to be nicely stable and usually stay in place. What a darling little boy to call you when he needs to go rather than finding a place other than the box.

You might lie down on the floor and put your eyes level with his and look around the room. This will help you make things more comfortable for him. You'll want to do this once a month until he's grown. You are such good cat parents, he's a lucky little boy.
