I have never owned a long haired cat and my boyfriend recently got one. We brush daily and his coat is finr, but his patootie gets a little dirty. We were planning on doing a sanitary cut because of this, but we've never had to take a cat to be groomed. Any ideas on cost? We've called a few places and gotten a range from $45-80 for a wash and the trim.

That seems reasonable. I paid about $35 each to have two cats groomed (full bath, entire body fur trim, nails clipped) at a family owned independent grooming / boarding place.

Is there any way you could eventually do the trimming/clipping yourselves? It took a while but my boy finally let me - I started (and still do to a degree) when he was deeply asleep.
Maybe? He's actually quite good about letting me wipe down the mess with a wet paper towel or a pet wipe, but I've never groomed a cat other than a bath when they'd made a mess of themselves, so cutting their hair or shaving it scares me a bit.

It has been a LONG time since I took a cat to a groomer. I used to take my first Persian to one and he looked so nice groomed They thought he was cute and always put a blue ribbon on him tied in a bow. I That was back in the '80s. I am fortunate that the breeder I got Theo from bathed him so he is a joy to bathe. I trim as needed to aviod Klingons (Star Trek anybody? LOL). I had to keep Oliver trimmed or he carried the Klingons around the house and droped them like little bombs for me to find with my feet. It grows back. So far I have had no issues with Theodore's hinee.

He seems like he would be okay with being bathed as he was a show cat who was bathed, but the trimming.... I'm not sure I'm capable

I think there are blunt ended scizzors you can get. DO NOT use sharp pointerd scizzors! If the cat flinches, you might stab them! Just talk to the cat and reassure them. Relax. I trim the fur that has the klingon remains on it first and see if that was enuff. You won't have to trim much off.

He got a bath last night and took it like a champ, I was actually really happy to find a good shampoo, and now he smells good and his butt isn't dirty, do you have any scissors you recommend as I'll try trimming I think.

I think I was told that I could get a good blunt nose pair of scissors at a beauty supply. I have not needed any yet so I have not really looked. Oliver was a doll so I used the sharp ones I have (I do not recommend that). I would not try with Theodore. With the sources we have on the internet nowadays it should not be hard.

Kitty looks SO soft! I use oatmeal shampoo with vanilla scent. It is calming for Theodore. He will need another bath in about a week.

I used an oatmeal shampoo called tropiclean oximed hypoallergenic because it only had 5 ingredients I think and I understood what they all were. :flail:

The only scissors I use are the blunt tipped baby scissors, which are used for trimming around the eyes. I also use thinning shears to help shape the head. I would not use scissors for a sanitary clip. If you do use them put a comb between the scissors and the cats skin. What I would suggest is a pair of electric clippers. Much quicker and safer for a sanitary clip.
