Molly has decided that she loves Tiki Cat Velvet Mousse, especially the chicken and egg flavor. I think part of why she likes it is the less pate like consistency. Anything in gravy she licks the gravy and leaves the rest, and pates she often licks a bit of, then walks away. Smashing the pate with a fork gets me "Really? I can tell you just smashed it with a fork. It's the same thing." sort of looks. Mixing water with the pate can get her to eat more, but sometimes she still is not thrilled.

The velvet mousse is a different, less...congealed/gelled texture, and she seems to like that. Are there other wet foods with a similar soft texture? Pate-type blended, but doesn't retain the shape of the container when you plate it? Tiki cat is better than a lot of options, but all of the velvet mousse has chicken, seafood, or both, and I know too much of those might not be the best for her health, so I'd like other options to add to the rotation.

My cats that prefer slurpy textured food will eagerly eat the BFF OMG flavors... these foods are very soupy, like a thick gravy with a few chunks. The gravy is the majority of the food, which is good for cats that like to lick gravy, because they end up actually eating almost all of the can contents that way. But I don't know if that is what you are looking for. Only problem is that it's low calorie so you have to feed a lot... but certain cats really gobble it up.

My girl loves that food too, but hates any fish but salmon so it really limits the flavors she'll eat from them. She also likes the Caru Stews which are soupy with tiny bits in it, and I've had luck with the Weruva Slide N Serve. If I really have issues getting her to eat a pate I mix it with bone broth or kitten milk replacer, which seems to do better for her. The Slide N Serve mixes up really nicely even just with a fork though for us.

I can't think of any that don't hold their form when you plate them. The closest I can think of are Sheba pate and Weruva's (relatively) new BFF Play pates. Those are both pretty soft and very lickable. The BFF food is probably low-calorie like the BFF OMG foods that Lutece mentioned.

Some foods will puree nicely in a food processor. I've done that with a Cuisinart miniprep.

Thanks for the advice so far everyone, keep it coming!

The Applaws says it is supplement, I think, so it would be more like a treat than her main food, right? It's hard to tell with the Solid Gold, but potatoes and peas are in the top five ingredients, and I'm not sure I want to be paying that much for fillers. It is also the same sort of flavors (chicken, seafood) that I was hoping to get away from a little. Not saying I don't welcome all suggestions, but I was hoping for at least a little more variety for her.

Sheba is one of the ones she'll almost tolerate, in that if I do add water and very thoroughly mash it she'll usually eat more than half of one of the small servings. Usually. If I don't, she'll lick the tiny bit of gravyish stuff, take about three more licks, and walk away. :sigh:

I tried the Fancy Feast Classic pates, and even with water she was...well, if I made sure she'd been out of dry for at least an hour or two, and petted her and showed it to her several times, she might eat it.

The Tiki Cat velvet has her around my ankles, staring at the place where I'll set her bowl, purring up a storm, and dancing around in place when I serve it straight out of the pouch. Half a pouch at a time gets devoured in one go usually, and if I'm going to be out for the day and put out the whole pouch, she'll have finished it by the time I get home.

I'm kind of hoping to find something else she likes as much as the Tiki Cat, without having to do all the extra 'please eat this!' additions and modifications. I mean, obviously, I will if I need to, but I prefer the "Oh, you made steak! Yay!" reaction to "Oh, you made yams. ...Thanks for putting the mini marshmallows on top, mom."

She sheds like three cats, so I'm hoping high protein, medium fat, and low carb with as few fillers as I can get will help. She used to shed like six cats before the Tiki Cat, so...I think it's working? Of course, right now she's shedding winter coat, and has fur literally fly off her when she sneezes, so this might not be the best time of year to test if the food helps with shedding... I have noticed since switching her to part wet, part dry, she poops less (and it smells less!) and pees more. Of course, she also adores her water fountain, which helps her get enough to drink.

The mousse foods contain xanthan gum which doesn't agree with my Krista at all. Runs like a river through her. Mousse in, mousse out. Have you seen Molly's poops on this food before you decide to go all in?

If that's not an issue...

The BFF Slide-n-serve pouches probably fit this bill.

Fancy Feast Classic, if you put an entire can in a blender, including that jelly stuff on top, it comes out pretty smooth like a milkshake. You may be able to add some fish oil/salmon oil to it to make it more palatable and also thicken it up closer to a mousse. You're not going to get that same thicker consistency without a gum or a thickener. You could experiment with gelatin to see if that would firm it up in an acceptable way for Molly. Gelatin is a cat-appropriate thickener since cats would normally eat those bony/connective tissue fibers in their prey anyway.

Also, I portion pates into plastic baggies, and then run those under hot water. Not only does warming up the portion make it more appealing/more aromatic, but it also softens up the pate making it more lickable. My Krista thankfully hasn't been a gravy licker but with the way she's been losing teeth to resorptive lesions, I know she appreciates her pates being warmer and more lickable.

daftcat75 daftcat75 I think adding gelatin would make Molly refuse it. She wants it less gel like, not more. She likes lickable softness. Milkshake is probably a great description for the texture she loves though, thanks! As to her litterbox results, she seems to be doing fine with the Tiki Cat. She's pooping less than she used to back when she was on lower quality kibble only, and her littebox is much less smelly with no signs of loose stool or similar issues. Warming under running water before serving might have some merit too, I'll keep that in mind. She did seem to like the pates she barely tolerated better when the water I added was warm.

I've grabbed a couple different Weruva options, and a few Tiki Cat options in other textures. I'll try those and see what happens. If Molly turns up her nose at it, I'm pretty sure the feral mama and kittens I'm working on trapping on my back porch will be happy to make sure not a single bit goes to waste.

Try Soulistic as well. It's basically a lesser expensive version of Weruva and made by the same company.

Molly's opinion of Tiki Cat After Dark, chicken and various organs flavor: Hm, yeah, this broth is tasty, if a little thin. All these other parts make it sort of hard to get to though, lots to eat around. *leaves all the actual meat after she laps up the broth*

Mama cat's opinion of me opening the other can of that flavor and adding the meat Molly rejected: OH MY GOD, THIS IS AMAZING. I AM SO HAPPY WITH THIS FOOD THAT I DO NOT EVEN CARE YOUR HAND IS STILL TOUCHING THE FOOD DISH AND I AM SO DISTRACTED I'M FORGETTING TO MAKE MY USUAL I'M EATING EFF OFF GROWL BECAUSE THIS IS SO WONDERFUL HOW FAST CAN I EAT THIS OH MY GOD LIFE IS GOOD.

I think mama cat is less picky than Molly. ;)
