Hello! Understanding and advice is appreciated.

Every morning when we are getting ready to leave for work, our cat walks starts crying, runs into our room, cries more, picks up MY slipper (only mine), quickly carries it into the area of the living room she typically plays (video below), and then rubs her head all over the soft part of my slipper while crying until I walk in -- then she immediately stops, looking ashamed. If I walk into my room and "catch" her doing this, she stops but then will do it later. If she doesn't do this when I am actually present that morning, I'll still come home from work and the slipper, or BOTH slippers, have mysteriously been dragged into the living room.

We adopted her last September and she is 6. She was at the Humane Society for four or five months before we adopted her and was a quiet but nice kitty in a communal cat room. She was relinquished because her past owner had two other dogs, and suddenly got a job that required her to be out of town a lot. Apparently our kitty started having accidents in the house. Nothing like that has happened with us, but it does break my heart to hear her crying. I try talking to her but she won't stop crying until she has brought the slipper to the living room. She is a loving, sweet girl who always greets us when we come home and follows us everywhere we go. She has absolutely no behavioral issues!

My thoughts are
(1) separation anxiety? she only does this when we are going to work and are doing our morning routines.
(2) hunting/play?? she drags the slipper back to where she plays and hunts other things, but she sounds so sad when she does it, and never cries like this at other times :(

I'd love any help understanding her or advice in how best to respond. I clearly haven't done anything right, because this has been happening every workday since we adopted her!

Thank you!
Emily

I think she loves the scent and feel of your slippers the same way other cats like the feel or smell of wool, so she steals it, rubs on it and nuzzles it. I think she just goes off in her comfort zone and you interrupt that with your presence.

My Willow doesn’t steal them but she spends a lot of time rubbing tennis or leather shoes or dragging them over her face.

Well. I have to say that video had me laughing, with her little high-headed, tail up prance with her own personal "catch of the day" as she zips into the next room :flail:
I think susanm9006 susanm9006 is right, she just likes it is all. She might be missing you when you leave and that's her new security blanket. Whatever the cause is, it's a cute habit.
A few of ours (the girls mostly) will do this sort of thing with objects and bring them to us and drop them at our feet. We can't decide if it's a new "kitten" they're showing off or something they feel they caught and killed and are trying to feed us, but it's cute. If it's the latter they just don't understand that we don't want to eat our own smelly old socks.
It kind of reminds me of a little kid who picks you a bouquet of dandelions. They don't think of them as weeds, they think of them as flowers, and the gesture and thought is just cute.

I would say it is definitely separation anxiety. Our cat Milly has a few particular toys she does this with whenever my husband and I are both out of the house. We always keep a few favorite toys of hers in particular locations so that she knows where they are -- this happens to be by some of our windows. I have a feeling she watches us leave via the window(s), and she'll pick up the toy by the associated window and carry it into the bedroom. We come home and find that either a wool kickie toy we named , "Log", or her favorite chicken toy, "Mr. Doodles", or another wool toy, "Ms. Mustard" (a yellow duck), has been deposited in our bedroom on the floor. She could have just been playing with them, but I don't think so.

I think it may be separation anxiety, too. Lily was abandoned with her five kittens and she's never gotten over it, but is getting better. If I leave the room, and she doesn't notice, she starts wailing in that deep throaty wail that indicates stress. She will also get a toy mouse and throw it around still crying. I usually call her so she knows where I am, and then she quits. She's gotten less and less anxious as time goes on, and comes to find me often now instead of wailing.

I love the video! Me? I would be buying her a few pairs of slippers! I would also try things to minimize her separation anxiety; just in case she has it.

My boy gets all hyper and runs into my large bathroom/his play room and meows really loud. I call back ‘what? Jackie come here.” Then usually throw him a toy for him to fetch.

:) I would do that too, but the newer slippers will have to be new ones for the people! The current ones that smell like the feet she loves are the ones your kitty is hankering for. :) (It's always good to have new slippers on standby, 'tho!)

E emilyfcross , what is your kitty's name? :hearthrob:

Felix steals my clothes all the time. Nothing is off limits. One morning, he told me to get up and feed him but I ignored him so he went into my suitcase and stole a bra. He loves sweaters and shirts though. Especially when they haven't been washed. He hardly steals clean clothes.

It's pretty normal I guess?

A lot of kitties do that. My family has always said that they're dragging their "babies" around. Our first cat had a stuffed Dalmatian and a pink glove, one of my mom's current cats stole a wool laundry ball, etc. I suppose for some cats it may be a manifestation of separation anxiety but some cats just seem to like doing it.

I've been tempted to leave a pretty big stuffed animal around, just to see if our cat drags that to another room while we are gone, lol. It's funny to see them carrying something twice their size around the house! I've had my cat drag blankets around too, and the little plush fleece "donut" beds.

Our cat had an old sock, and stole a dog toy and made it her own.
Baby Girl brought a toy to the top of the stairs, lovingly calling to it, dropped it, and then promptly shoved it down the stairs. This is why she was spayed :flail:
