Good morning..I'm new here, been reading the forum on pregnant cats and newborn kittens. I bought a kitchen scale and going to be weighing my 5 new babies today. My problem is they are all black and no distinctive markings yet they are 2 days old today, she woke me up at 2 am Mothers Day and wanted me to sit right there beside her box while she have birth. I rescued the momma when she was a baby, she was in a parking lot up under a car. She don't meow.. just squeeks. We were getting ready to take her to be fixed and she got out and a neighborhood Tom got her.
My question is how do I tell them apart? Can I mark them somehow so I know who weighs what? Honey says a sharpie dot on the tail of one ,two dots for the second and so on...is this safe or is there a better way?Momma kitty is young and her first liter and I want to make sure they are doing good.Once they are weaned all will be getting fixed.

I initially put a dot of non toxic marker in their ears, but I found it rubbed off too easily.
Others have suggested painting one nail, however I prefer to used velcro collars (I leave just enough velcro for it to stick, but that it comes off easily if kitten gets stuck).

I put collars on my kittens within minutes of birth. I check them out, weigh them and then put the collar on.

I take the regular velcro dog whelping collars and cut them in half width wise so they are thinner, and cut them again length wise ahead of time, then cut again to adjust them to proper length when I put them on the kitten.

Do you know what the 91g and 95g ones were at birth? Ideally they should be gaining a minimum of 10g a day.

Would love to see some pictures :)

Yes as long as mom is still nursing kittens, eating and moving around normally, a small amount of spotting or bloody discharge is normal after birth.

If you notice the amount of blood or frequency of bleeding increases (or bleeding has a foul odor) you will need to take her to the vet because she may an infection or retained kitten.
