So I am new here not everyone knows us, but we have a 4.5 month of kitty named smokey and we took her to the vet about 2 weeks ago for her first shots and vet visit, Anyhow the last few days she has been very very bad lil girl, i have found two different places in her home area she has peed on things, she has 2 litter boxes ( one is really my moms 2 cats potty but they hardly go out on the sun porch now to use it0 she knows she can use it or hers either one. I will admit my wife hadn't cleaned it in a few days so she might have been telling us hey clean my bathroom...

well today i took her with me out on her leash like i do often. i had her tied to her stake near where i was and we had been outside maybe a hour she had been fine, but all sudden she jumped and then i seen her get out of her harness and took off running, I took off after her and she refused to come to me, she went all around the house up on porch, down off it, back around finally my mom came out trying to get her to come to her, i even had her wet food she likes and still wouldn't come. I gave up and went to finish what i was doing i thought she would come to my mom, well another 20 mins and mom didn't even know where she was, we have woods and she ran into them. i walked on the outer part of the woods and seen no sign of her. another 5 minutes maybe and here she comes from up on the other side. only way mom got her to come up to here was with a string. i don't understand what her issue is.

i wouldn't worry about her so much outside if she was fixed but we have to do that within next few weeks. while shes on the sun porch she keeps running from one window to another i know they are other cats (strays) outside.. sh was a tiny lil stray we decided to take in.

So, I am confused - did she come back or not? If not, you are going to have to spend some time outside, especially after dusk and dawn, and call to her. Take a bag/can of treats/food and shake it while calling to her. And, sit there... and sit there, and sit there...
Repeat until you find her.

If she did come back home, right now - no more outside time like that until you figure out what's going on. And, certainly NOT until she is spayed.

Something is going on that has shaken her up. Perhaps it is the stray cats around. If none of the cats in your home are allowed outside, I would be looking into some cat deterrent sprays to use in the yard a bit away from, but around, your sun porch.

Hopefully, you are right about the litter box issue - in terms of it not being cleaned out enough for her. See if she goes back to consistently using it once it has been routinely kept clean. But, given her age this could have to do with hormones that won't stop until she is spayed.

Yes my mom finally got her to come to her and i put her back on the porch.
my moms two cats do not go outside alone only with my mom and that isn't very often.. something to keep cats out of the yard would be great cause right now we have two different orange cats coming around, a big grey cat and a tiny stripped cat.

Hi! As mentioned try cat deterrent spray, or you could try spraying pieces of cloth with citrus scented furniture polish and placing those around the yard. They'll have to be maintained so the smell stays fresh, but cats don't like citrus and this sometimes has worked to keep strays/ferals away.

Also instead of staking her, you could try this - my boy uses his now and then :)

does she have the two litter boxes to herself or is it shared with the other cats. if it's shared, I would recommend to get 2 more... either way, they really should be cleaned daily, even if they don't look or smell too bad cats have way better sense of smell than we do, and she probably didn't use it because it looked like a dirty unflushed toilet. Also I would say to invest in a new harness, one that is as escape proof as possible... so that when she's spooked she can't suddenly wiggle loose and bolt off like she did. My cat doesn't bolt, so I've been lucky, but even then I got him a fairly snug harness, you never know.

My friend has a bolty cat so she uses this one:

Mine uses this one, but when he was 5 months old this, in the smallest size was pretty loose on him:

1) Stop taking her outside until she is spayed
2)
I took off after her and she refused to come to me, she went all around the house up on porch, down off it, back around finally my mom came out trying to get her to come to her, i even had her wet food she likes and still wouldn't come. She isn't misbehaving or having an issue, she is scared. Cats who are out of their natural environment don't respond to their humans, don't come when called. She jumped (startled!) and took off. She was terrified of something. Something spooked her.
3) Cats don't respect whose litter box is whose. Put more in the house if she is going outside the box. Rule is 1 per cat plus 1.

At 4.5 months she could definitely be in heat get her fixed as soon as possible. Clean her litter box everyday day. Multiple cats should have several litter boxes. If your wife can't get to cleaning them one day, you do it. It's part of having a cat. No more going outside until she's spayed and get a harness that she can't get out of.

Agree with all of the above. In addition, tethering a kitten is really dangerous. Cats need to be able to escape predators outside. You can walk her on s leash once she is spayed and the harness fits properly, but she needs your constant supervision and should never be tied.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

As i said the litter boxes on the sun porch are both for my kitty to use right now my moms two cats do not go out there since my cats out there. they not made friends yet and my moms cats still hiss at her.
My mom has 2 adult cats and they both share one box inside the house.

her leash is 15 foot long and shes has been outside almost every single day with me this is the first time shes gotten off like that and ran from me.
Not sure why or what she would be scared of. I was 10 feet from her when she got off the leash.

that tent thing looks neat but very expensive.

I don't clean her box cause i seem to be allergic to the litter, first time i changed it i cough sneezed for a week after.

She keeps going into heat. she has 5-6 times now since shes been with us. but she wasn't acting like she was the day she got off.

Hi!
Can you find a less dusty, unscented litter? What you have currently is not good for your cat either.

There is any number of things a cat can detect that we can't. The tent, or a similar version is more than worth keeping your kitty safe. Cats aren't dogs and shouldn't be staked for this very reason of what happened to you, because when they're frightened they will do anything they can to get away including fighting a harness to the point of hurting themselves.

A little expense now will pay out dividends, and when she reaches her mature size you'll be set :)

You might also want to consider wearing a mask when cleaning out the litter box. And, if possible space-wise add a second one for her to use.

Have you ever considered a catio, instead of a tent? Yes, there is expense involved, but would be an ideal situation for your cat. If you know someone who is handy at building things, a catio can be constructed for a relatively low cost.

There are non-clay litters - wheat, grass and seed - that might produce less dust. Check around on the Net, read the reviews with the dust in mind. I found the wheat litter produced NO dust whatsoever.

If she was acting like she was in heat the day she escaped you need to get her to the vet ASAP and get her spayed, unless you really want kittens. If you do want more kittens the shelters are full of them right now.

Only spaying will keep her from going into heat. So far you've been lucky, not just in her not getting pregnant but in not having a yard full of tom cats leaving their mark (spray - tom cat spray is unique, fortunately), fighting all night, hanging on your window screens screaming , "Hi ya' babe, how about it!"

Didn't your vet mention any of this when you got her her vaccinations? By law she has to have a rabies vaccination. If she runs into a wild animal who might have it, they will quarantine her for weeks and make you pay for the quarantine. If you're lucky she won't get rabies, but it's a hell of a risk to take. Cases have been reported in Georgia before now, stay alert, better yet get the vaccine and protect your cat.

The vet said she couldn't get her sprayed right now, they were worried about her weight shes only 4.5 pounds also at 4.5 month old. . the rabies shot will be the next trip to the vet. and her booster to go with her shot from the first time. we plan to do that next week. that's when they said bring her back.

they wanted her to get a lil older and to get a lil bigger before giving the rabies short or having her fixed.

this is a cat that just showed up at the house and we feel for. its one less cat out on the streets but my wife works at walmart and i dont work so income is limited. ive never heard of a catio i will look it up..

ive had cats in the past and they went outside only on leashes. and i would tie them to something when i was in the yard never no issues. lot of times shes not tied to anything and i just use the leach to catch her or stop her if she heads somewhere she shouldn't be.

4.5 lbs at 4.5 months is totally normal. They gain about a pound a month until they are a little older. They can be done at 8 weeks or 2lbs so I don't know what is going on that your vet says she is too young... Find a new vet who knows what he is talking about?
