Just out of curiosity, do you think this kitten will be smoke when she’s an adult? She’s a foster and will be spayed when she’s 8 weeks and 2 pounds. I’ve fostered a lot of kittens but never any that look like her or her sister.

Sure, they might turn out to be smokes. When you part their fur, what color is it at the base? How about mom's fur?

Smoke is caused by a dominant gene, so in order for the kittens to be smoke or silver, at least one parent must be smoke or silver. If mom isn't a smoke, but the kittens are smokes, then dad would have had to be one.

I actually believe that smoke is more common in the domestic cat population than people think, because you can't always tell from looking at a cat whether it's a smoke. We had a smoke barn cat when I was a child, so I've always been fond of that color.

It’s very light at the base. Their mom is a torti. She has a light base that’s only noticeable when her fur is parted.

Light at the base, or white at the base? It's normal for the coat to be a bit lighter at the base... but with a smoke it's white at the base, with a sudden transition between white base and colored tip.
