Starting To Refuse Wet Food

My 10 month old kitten is currently on fromm dry food and nulo wet food. She seems to get bored easily and I switch her wet food between nulo and fromm.

Recently, she started turning her nose up at wet food of both brands.

She still gobbles up her dry food. She also loves raw meat. When I make tacos or burgers, I'll give her a portion of raw ground chuck and she eats it like she's starving.

She seems like she has a hairball because she was hacking a couple nights ago. I got her some hairball paste. She refuses the hairball treats, but eats the paste.

She is extremely picky about treats. I can get a bag of treats and she'll eat a few before not liking them at all anymore.

I do not think she has a blockage because she is eating her dry food normally and has regular litter box presents. I check litter box every day.

I've also tried warming up her wet food. This morning, I had a warmed up bowl next to a bowl from the fridge. Same kind of wet food from the same can.

She showed more interest in the cold one and nibbled off a little before going to her dry food.

I'm going to try some fancy feast tonight and see if she eats that.

Any advice on what I should do? I'd like her to eat wet food so she gets moisture.

Her regular schedule is 1/3 cup dry food per day plus half a can of wet food. Standard 5.5 oz can.

It gets split into a morning and night feeding. She's a 10 LB cat at 10 months old. I know she's probably a little overweight, but the vet said she was fine like that.

TIA for any advice

My kittens have allergies. So I switch up brands a lot that don’t have the stuff they can’t havr. They enjoy it. They do get board if it’s the same all the time. Also they don’t get tired of the dry. Try other brands and textures. Also keep in mind would you like eating the same food everyday for years?

I think she needs more variety. My canned cats have 7 different cans to eat for breakfast so they don't ever seem to get bored. For dinner they get homemade raw chicken, Turkey or rabbit. Variety is key!

No I would not. I thought I could keep her happy by switching flavors of nulo and fromm, but I guess not

Gonna try fancy feast tonight

I'm interested in homade foods. She loves raw ground chuck. Hates cooked turkey. I really want to get her on the raw diet. But I'm super nervous about Taurine. There's chicken livers for sale at my grocery store, though.

If you're interested it's easy but expensive to buy raw meat and organs from Hare Today. And you can even use a premix with eggshell calcium added. You just need liver:

I'm scared of the expenses also
Well the most economical method is buying chicken thighs and grinding bone in them. You would have to use the premix that doesn't contain calcium, which the site has as well. This method will be cheaper than buying high quality canned. But then again you would still be lacking in variety if you only feed raw chicken.

I also second variety of brands and flavors (fancy feast, tiny tiger) and raw feeding, but you could also take her dry food away when you feed her wet (or actually at least an hour before wet meal) so that she has no option to choose from. And give it back in an hour or two.

Hello MeowHiss MeowHiss and little girl! Actually, a kitten is a kitten for a full year, and many experts recommend feeding kitten food for that year, because growing kittens need the extra calories and nutrients that kitten food supplies. And wet food really is a "must" for a healthy cat according to many experts. I agree with other posters' suggestions about variety. My three cats, who are all "mature", get lots and lots of variety. I feed them wet food 3x/day and they have high quality dry free-choice. They are not overweight at all (though my male is a tiny bit girthy) and they eat very well. Some good brands of wet food that are reasonable in price include Fancy Feast and Nutro, which makes a good kitten food.

Lydia will turn up her nose to food if she gets it more than 2 to 3 times a week. So I rotate a lot of varieties to keep her interested.
My boy cat ate just about anything. This is new territory for me with a fussy cat :ohwell:

Hello!

My vet told me to transition her to adult food after she got spayed. He even told me to put her on Fromm. She was spayed at 5 months and was already 7 lbs. I was told that Fromm was ok for all life stages.

She used to be on instinct rabbit formula, but that made her itchy.

Well, I guess you should go with what your vet says. I hope you are able to find some good foods that she will like. In my experience, vets, like human doctors, tend to prescribe what's pushed by the pharmaceutical or, in this case, food companies. I don't hold with that, personally. But I would not want to contradict your vet. If you do decide to look for a more varied diet, though, there have never been more options at various price points and levels of quality.

There's no difference between high quality adult cat food and kitten food.

My other cat, Jasmine did too but Lydia has always been more finicky! Once Jasmine died she went off ANY foods they both ate so I had to try everything to find new favorites!

It's not a vet's orders or anything. They just recommend that food. Since she's sick of it, they'd probably recommend science diet, which she most likely will ignore.

Kiki is my cat's name, btw. I got her a few different brands of wet food tonight.

The one I tried feeding for her 8pm feeding is Purely Fancy Feast natural white chicken meat in those little oval containers. She ate it all

I didn't get the fancy feast cans because it looks like they all have carageegan.

Unless it's new, the Fancy Feast Classic Pates at least do not contain carageenan.

Glad to hear she gobbled something up though! Always a good thing to have a full belly on a kitty :)

It’s really odd they do that. But will happily eat the same dry for years.
