I am not very good at wrapping gifts but for Christmas and for kid's birthdays I wrap the gifts. For adult birthday gifts and shower gifts I use the bags.

I was at a market a year or so ago and there was a woman selling off-cuts of brightly patterned material.. as gift wrap!
That sounds like Furoshiki, the traditional cloth gift wrap people use over here.

I use wrapping paper if the gift is in a box, or gift bags if it's an odd shape. I think wrapped boxes look really nice, but I'm not very good at wrapping so I only attempt very simple shapes with wrapping paper.

I like wrapping with paper. I do keep gift bags though in case I don't have a box to put the gift in.

Christmas gifts are wrapped in Christmas paper with a bow. All other presents get wrapped in whatever I have: real wrapping paper, gift bag, brown paper bag decorated with stickers, colored tissue paper, construction paper, Sunday comics...
