I haven't worked night shifts for several months now but as I was getting ready for one the other night and coming out of the bedroom to have a shower, Oliver noticed me from the bottom of the stairs and came running up with his, "Wah, wah, wah" meowing style which is always cute. Then he parked himself outside the bathroom and waited for me to finish.
He doesn't normally do this but I think he sensed I wasn't going to be with him for the night. It was so cute and made me feel special. I love him soooo much.
How about yours? I bet there will be many similar stories.

Aw, so sweet. Anyone who says animals aren't sentient clearly hasn't owned a cat or a dog!
Toffee and Fudge are fine once we actually go away and act as if nothing happened when we come back, but during the build up they get very restless and often follow us more than usual. I think they can also sense our stress because the lead up to organising trips can often get stressful.
They have also learnt that when they hear our mugs chink together it means we're going to get off from the sofa and both boys (more so Toffee, since he's a little attention-seeker haha) try their best to make us not leave the room.

I had to leave to go to NC to pick up DD a week ago Friday night. I was getting my overnight bag ready and was going outside to get the car ready Lilith and Sophie knew something was up. They both sat in the entryway watching my every move with "WHERE ARE YOU GOING?" looks on their faces. I told them I would be back soon and that they would be just fine. I got home early Sunday morning and got the silent treatment for a while. I went to lay down and Lily came to cuddle. She couldn't get close enough. I guess I had been forgiven for abandoning her with her sister who joined us not long after that. They know. They are very intelligent creatures.

Cats can sense if we will be leaving them, even temporarily. My cat Bourbon somehow senses when my annual vacation is near. She follows me everywhere in the apartment which she normally does not do, and gets very vocal - which is out of her character. Like now in 13 days time I will be leaving for a month and my cousin will take charge of them while I am away. She "senses" this and is now extra affectionate.

Buddy knows my morning routine on work days and has always followed me around as I get ready. The last month or so there have been some changes at work that REALLY make me not want to be there. I think Buddy can sense my dread of leaving and has started laying on top of my feet, making it very difficult to get ready. If I stop moving for a minute, he lays on my feet, shows me his belly, and gazes into my eyes. It's like he's telling me "Just stay home, Mom".

My Lily is like that. I once had a the boss from He** and it was so bad I would get physically ill before work every morning. Lily would follow me everywhere. When I got home she was at the door waiting for me. She even got in the shower with me! Her nick name was Velcro cat. She had to sleep in my arms at night as close as she could. Once I got transferred to another location (at my request), she settled back into being a cat instead of a Velcro cat. Now when she starts being Velcro cat again I know wither she is ill, or I am getting sick. My old lady soon to be 17, Lily (and before I get scolded for the lilies in the bouquet, it was only on the table in reach while I took the photo):
