HK is doing a little better, but messes are happening.

does anyone have baby wipes they recommend for cleaning sides of face and lower body as needed? for that matter, does anyone have a cat shampoo or soap they particularly like to get off food, pee and poop? less ingredients is better, i'd guess.

HK has never had a bath in his life till this morning - i woke up at 5 am from my pathetic 3 hours of sleep as i heard him bumping around, trying to get up. i got up blearily to help him, and immediately discovered that he fell over on poop, which was caked all over his side from him trying to get up, which he can no longer do. yuck - what a way to wake up! and his fur tangled. by 6:15, though, things were looking up a bit.

so we want to be more prepared for messes. earlier today, he fell onto a plate full of food, and he also got the side of his face covered with gravy.

Hi. Poor baby!

I use GNC Hypoallergenic unscented wipes for basic clean ups. When Feeby had to have her backside cleaned from peeing on herself, I took two hospital wash tubs that I had, filled one with warm water, a second with warm water and actually just used a bit of Dove Sensitive Skin soap on a wet baby wash cloth. I laid her on a towel, and used multiple baby wash cloths for cleaning and rinsing the area. Then toweled dried her behind, pretty much by holding her in it to absorb remaining moisture.

thanks. is that bar soap or liquid? it appears we'll be needing a lot more supplies from here on out.

HK did NOT like being covered in poop, not that i blame him, but also did NOT like being toweled dry, not even just being held in the towel :D

Oh, I use bar soap. It didn't seem to be an issue with her, in terms of any type of irritation. I just bought the baby wash cloths since they are softer, and I had no idea if this was going to be a recurring routine or not (thankfully, so far, not!).

Feeby is pretty docile overall - I did have to kind of 're-arrange' her a couple of times back on the towel I had laid down for her. :p

I think Feeby was OK with the towel around her, because she realized the rest of the 'shenanigans' were over!!

My current diabetic cat Stella is incontinent and has mild neuropathy.....it may not be true incontinence but she cannot use a litter box. I take her to the bathroom and put her back side in the sink while resting her upper body on the drainboard and use Dr. Bronner liquid soap. I also have organic wipes, but frankly they are not strong enough to clean her, so I have to usually give her a bath.

dr. bronner peppermint or is there a mellower flavor?

it looks like we'll have to start giving HK baths from here on out. he can no longer always get up on his own, and things can get messy before he calls for me and i rush in.

You might want to ask to see the set up your vet's office has, just to get an idea if you could semi-simulate something in your own home. My vet has a set up that allowed them to place Feeby's backside in a sloped tub, with a hand-held shower head. They were able to clean/rinse just her behind, keeping the rest of her from having to get wet. Then, they towel dried the area (and, may have even used one of those low-noise dryers, I am not sure). I am sure whatever the vets have is too expensive to truly replicate, but I thought it might give you some ideas.

Feeby is a pretty docile cat, so it didn't come as a total surprise that the vet said it was like she knew she was getting cleaned up and actually seemed to enjoy it - even with a little bit of purring!

our vet's practice was bought by lesser vets who seem to be selling off part of their equipment. i know they don't treat the cats as well as the staff members treated the cats when the excellent vet was in charge and her secondary vet loved every cat.

that being said, you have given me an excellent idea - thanks! we can create a table with a sloped tub to use in the slower but well off the floor. since we have a hand-held shower head, that could work. i washed HK in the kitchen sink, which was - believe me - far from ideal. he did like towels warm from the washer when my husband dried him the second time.

basschick basschick there is an unscented Dr. Bronner's that I try to use but have used the peppermint with absolutely no problem. I have done this so repeatedly that if there were an issue I would have seen it. Stella does not like to bathe, but she has come to realize that she gets dirty in a way that she cannot handle and feel so much better afterwards.

I know I'm extremely late to this thread, but Dr. Bronners peppermint is okay to use? I thought peppermint was toxic to cats?

Peppermint can be bad for cats, yes. The amount of actual peppermint oil in diluted dr bronners is probably very small, but I wouldn’t use it just to be safe.

Dr. Bronners makes a Castile soap bar that’s completely unscented, I think it’s labeled baby soap? That’s what my vet recommended and I’ve used it on my cat to wash peanut butter off of him successfully before.

I have switched to the unscented baby Dr. Bronner's because I have eliminated all scented products from the home for all of us for more reasons than just having to wash the cat's rear end. Since April Stella has been moved to a different part of the house and now sleeps on a bed which can be topped with a pee pad, so she is much cleaner as I change the pads as soon as I see that something was soiled and she has adopted the habit of moving off the soiled pad onto a clean one and then waiting for me to get a new one.
