Hey! So today I saw a black kitten in our back yard. He/she was eating some birdseed that had fallen on the ground. I'm worried that it isn't getting proper food if its eating the seed.. I'm not sure the age of the kitten. Its not super small, but it definitely isn't fully grown. I don't know the gender either. My mom wants me to stay away from it due to possibly transferring fleas to our kitty, but I was able to get a bowl of wet kibble outside. I had quite the time trying to find a way to keep the ants from getting to the bowl. Any ideas on how to keep the ants out? Im also worried for the kittens safety. I didn't see a mother anywhere so I'm unsure if she's just in the forest out back or if she's possibly dead.. There's also big grey cat that hangs around our neighborhood and I'm not sure if he's the most friendly towards other kitties.. I don't want the kitten to get hurt and I'm not sure on how to keep the food away from the adult cat and the birds.. Can you help me figure something out? My mom won't take time to get the kitten to the vet so I have no way of checking the age or gender.. Pls help!

Whether your Mom realizes it or not, you’ve just become the guardian of the little one. In time she may come around to helping with the rescue, or not depending on other circumstances. Which in the meantime leaves you in a tough spot. Don’t give up, but be prepared for the possibility This kitten may have a brief time in your life. There will be more throughout your life. Cats always gravitate to cat people.

Making posters would be one way of letting the neighborhood know there is an abandoned kitty and for your Mom to see how much you care.

Putting a ring of cinnamon around the food area is supposed to help with ants. Depends on what kind of ants.

All in all best of luck.

Thank you! I'll definitely try that cinnamon trick! I think my mom is reluctant to help because we're moving soon and we really don't have the time or money to take care of another kitten, even if we aren't planning on keeping it..

Since your mom doesn't want anything to do with the kitten, maybe you could ask another adult to help you find a rescue group to help the kitten. You can put the food dish on a saucer filled with water to create a mote. The ants don't like to get wet.

Using a moat is a great idea! I'll try to find a rescue to take the kitten, but unfortunately the people around here(including my parents) don't really like stray cats, so I'm unsure if I'll be able to get help.. Thank you for the help!!

Surya’s advice is spot on to approach another adult or feral outreach. Your Mom’s reaction is understandable, but possibly another person can help the kitten find its home or a new home.

On the cat site go to menu then articles. Scroll down and there is an article about ants.
Take a photo of the kitten and text it to your friends and post it on next door, a very helpful app

It can be hard to find help for kitties. If you are on Facebook, do a search for Cat rescue and your town or a close by city. I have found groups that help cats this way.
There's a lady who lives somewhere nearby that takes in stray animals and cares for them. I'll have to try and find either her or a rescue.

I hope she can help the kitten. Let us know how it goes. :)
I'll try to! I'm not even sure if the kitten will come back tho.. Its hard to tell. We've had a couple cats and kittens that visited once or twice and we never saw them again

That happens here too. They must get scared away or find another place to eat.

I rescued a black kitten that was on my porch then immediately posted on next door. Just a few seconds after someone replied and they picked her up the next day
