My kitten Yuki - now 10 mos - has had ear problems since I brought him home at about 5 months. We treat the ear; they are "washed" weekly with a solution and then he will typically shake his head, causing large "crumbs" of ear wax to come flying out (gross!) My question is, what is causing this issue and what if anything can I do about it beyond what I am doing?

Tbh, if ALL possible ear conditions have been ruled out and it has been determined that Yuki is just one of those unlucky cats who easily have ear wax build up, there isn't much you can do but clean them regularly. Although, you could ask the vet about trying a different solution to see if it might be more effective, as well as changing whatever you are using the 'treat' the ear, as you said.

Here is an article that talks about all the possible causes of ear wax/discharge in cats. Maybe there are a few causes that haven't been looked into yet?

Thank you. Initially Yuki had an ear infection and he had 2 courses of antibiotic drops. The last time he was in, and checked, I dont think he had infection. I have something called TrizEDTA that I am cleaning his ears with. It seems to be improving but still not all better. Meowch thanks for the reply and article.
