My 12 year old has IBD but it's fairly mild. It's only been 10 days but he's doing so well off of the dry food (Blue Sensistive Stomach) and on canned that I'm really amazed. Again, it's only been 10 days but I have high hopes. I try to avoid carageenan but I'm not positive it bothers him. The other gums seem to be ok but again, not 100% sure. Rice is a no go, at least the whole rice in canned food is a definite no go and I'm wondering if the rice in the BB dry was a problem all along.

At any rate, I picked up a couple cans of Soulistic to try. It doesn't have carageenan but does have some other gums. My biggest concern is the dried egg though.

Is there any general concensus on dried egg and cats with sensitive tummies or is it an individual cat thing like most everything else?

Also, anyone have experience, good or bad, with Soulistic pates, or Soulistic in general?

I think we've settled on Stella and Chewy's pates as his main food. He likes it and tolerates it very well (so far). But, it's a bit expensive and more than one box a day is pushing the limits. I've been supplementing with Sheba which he also likes but concerned with some of the ingredients (artificial colors/flavors, Menadione, DL-Methionine [maybe a concern?] and overall byproduct quality).

The Soulistic looks like it may be a healthier food than the Sheba and it's less expensive.

Opinions appreciated.

Thanks

Our cats love the Soulistic pates! They have sensitive little guts and do just fine with egg. It can be difficult to sort out what causes IBD and other digestive sensitivities -- the causes are, indeed, very individual -- but if you'd been feeding this food, I suspect your cat's GI tract is probably very glad to get rid of the peas and potatoes, too. They just don't belong in cat food. I wouldn't want to feed the rice, barley, or oatmeal ingredients, either!

In any case, I'm glad your cat's already doing better. Personally, if I were in your situation and ten days have already passed without incident, I wouldn't worry about the egg. I'd proceed with slowly trying various wet foods that don't have any of those carby vegetable-matter ingredients. I'd also keep a food diary so it's (relatively) easy to keep track of what your cat is eating so you have some sense of what went wrong if something goes wrong. (I'm hoping it doesn't but even so!)

As for the Soulistic pates, our cats (who have weird digestive quirks themselves) love it. They only eat them about once a week but they're some of the cats' favorite canned foods. I agree that it's a better food than the Sheba and, hmm, yes, it probably would come out cheaper than Sheba per ounce if purchased in the large can! (We feed one meal of Sheba a week, too.) If you're looking for variety, Weruva's new BFF Play line has more combinations -- chicken and lamb, for example -- than Soulistic and the ingredients look the same. (The BFF pouch pates are a little different, though, with coconut oil; they also seem gummier. I only that them once, I think.)

FWIW, for our cats, I avoid anything carby, other than an occasional pouch of Weruva or Soulistic chicken with pumpkin that's thickened with tapioca -- I drain most of that. This means no potatoes, peas, chickpeas, lentils, carrots, and so on. I also keep menadione/synthetic vitamin K low (it's just in Sheba and one weekly can of Fancy Feast) and avoid agar-agar and carrageenan, making a very occasional exception for a small can of Nutro duck food, which they love. Although the cats get gums, they only get them once a day, where two of them split a small can: most of their food is either commercial raw or homecooked since those options make it so much easier to reduce the ingredients (like carrageenan) that I'm unsure of while feeding them a diet that I know agrees with them. Best of all, though, they don't get bored of it like they get bored with canned foods.

All that said, every cat is different and yours may have totally different demands! Good luck.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

I just gave him a little bit of Soulistic Chicken and Turkey this morning to try for the first time. So, it hasn't been 10 days. I've been feeding him mainly the Stella and Chewy's Pate for the past 10 days which does contain agar. But it hasn't been bothering him at all. It looks like the Agar is the only ingredient in the Stella and Chewy's that would be suspect but again, no problems for 10 days.

The Soulistic (Chicken and Turkey pate in the can) contains 3 gums and the dried egg. I'll see how it likes it and if he is ok with it. I'll also take a look at the other pates and check ingredients. Maybe the have something with fewer gums.

Lydia is super picky but has an iron stomach. She really likes the Soulistic pates in the can! They are very similar to the Weruva Pates which she also likes, but are more budget friendly
