I am looking for advice. I have posted here before and I understand that some people said this cat was not a feral cat. He showed up last June. I fed him. He was a kitten. He did not and would not come anywhere near us for 4 months. He eventually got closer and has lived in our garage all winter. He got injured about a week and a half ago and now his wound is oozing. He will not let us pick him up. Could someone please give me advice on how to get him antibiotics/medical help? How do you get a non socialized cat into a crate to get to a vet?

Thank you for taking care of this kitty!

You might also want to throw a blanket over him and pick him up and put him - blanket and all - in a carrier. You could also ask your vet for a small dose of Gabapentin (which can be put in food) to slightly sedate him. That might be the preferred route anyway in order for a vet to be willing to see him.

If he will eat inside a crate as surya surya has suggested, that is great. But, if that can't be accomplished quickly, then a more drastic approach needs to be taken since it sounds like the condition of his wound is serious.

If you think you could lure him into a crate with treats and then close the door, that would be best. If you can grab him in a towel or blanket without getting hurt or hurting him, then put him in a crate that's another option. Wear long sleeves, gloves, etc. You can put the crate on end so you would just gently drop him down. If you can't get him into a crate, you might need to use a humane trap. Maybe withhold food for a meal, then use something really stinky as bait (sardines worked for me!) and hopefully he will go in right away. Be prepared to cover the trap immediately and get him to the vet.

Gabapentin is great but only if he is in a place (maybe your garage?) where he wouldn't be able to run away and get drowsy in an unsafe place. Also, most vets won't prescribe medicine for a cat they haven't seen, but it can't hurt to ask.

I don't know if there is any medicine you could use without a vet visit, but you could call your vet and ask for advice and help.

UPDATE**** thank you all for your advice. My husband was able to get him into a crate and we took him to the humane society. He will see a vet tomorrow, get antibiotics, neutered, vaccines. They said they will call and we can get him Thursday.

***second update***
His leg was absessed. I went to the humane society yesterday hoping they would let me see him. They couldn't because of their policy. They said they only do neuters/spays on Wednesdays, so he has to stay there and get cleared medically next Tuesday so he can be neutered on Wednesday. I can't lie. This is really hurting my heart. I hate that he has to be there another week, and I hate to think that he thinks we abandoned him. I just want him back.

The kitty is getting the healthcare he needs. He will forgive you. Hang in there!

I think that is extreme. Wish you could have gone somewhere else. Can you appeal to a manager?
I know where they are going to take him to get neutered. I'm going to call them in the morning and ask if I pay for the neuter and vaccines, if they would neuter him sooner.

Or, at a minimum treat his abscess, let him come home for a while before neutering day. Or, at least, let you visit with him in the meantime. Even let you bring his favorite food and treats - perhaps, a favorite blanket and/or toy?

Looks like you've gotten a lot of good suggestions and since he's in care, that's half the battle, L Livethedream13 -- I am just seeing this thread and so am adding *PRAYERS*, best thoughts of wellbeing and quick recuperation for him. Are you going to adopt him *hope, hope*? All the very best for him, and thank you and your husband SO MUCH for caring about him!

They have been treating the abscess. They said he was responding to the meds, but he needed more than a day to heal his leg access before sending him to get neutered. Since he was brought in as a "feral cat", we have no "rights".

***Third update***
For anyone still following my story. I talked to the humane society on Monday. The lady said that his leg is doing much better. He has been medically cleared so he will be neutered today (Wednesday). He will be back at the humane society on Thursday around noon. She said they would call us and if we couldn't get him Thursday, that we could get him Friday. I told her to call as soon as he could leave because I am literally 2 minutes away. I asked about his age and she said that he might be a year old based on his teeth. That makes sense to me since he started coming here at the end of June last year. We feed another feral cat (about the same length of time) that still will come nowhere near us and eats and leaves. I asked the lady about flea and tick prevention and she said it would be impossible since he is un handle able. Apparently he has had to be sedated several times to check him. I told her that he curls up on our laps in the garage and she said that it must be a different cat. I told her that he would only do that with my husband and I and I would show her pics when we come to get him.

Thanks for the update! I hope all goes well with the neutering and that you have him home with you ASAP. :goodluck:

There are a couple of oral flea treatments that could be put in food, but they are not long lasting, and I know of none for ticks. Capstar and Comfortis. There is one product I've seen, but I don't really know anything about it that is supposed to be a flea, tick, and mosquito repellent in chewable tablet form called Flea Away.

He is back. He came back Thursday afternoon. He was scared and took about 15 minutes to come out of the cage. He wanted nothing to do with us for a couple hours. I asked about flea and tick treatment and they said it was impossible because he was not handleable. He only let's us touch him.
