Look at the ingredients. Meat should be the #1 ingredient. I personally will not get anything with fillers (ie. corn, peas, potatoes). I will make exceptions for corn meal because they need that to hold the dry food together.
I feed Pro Plan, but it is expensive. Purina one is a good alternative as long as you read the label. For canned food, I feed Fancy Feast and it's on the inexpensive side.
Canned food is important. This is where they get most of their moisture, and with male cats especially, it helps keep down crystals in the bladder and urethra.

Meow mix is one of the worst. If you look at the ingredients you would think it’s chicken feed at first and not food for an obligate carnivore. You can spend a little more and buy something a lot better.

Cats are obligate carnivores and Meow Mix is the McDonalds/highly processed/junk of the cat food world. If you want to go the grocery store brand route stick to canned only first of all, and even a Fancy Feast classic pate would be a step up in the right direction.

I feed Fancy Feast classic pate with a few teaspoons of water added. Tuff loves it, has a beautiful coat and very healthy.

Is this this dry Meow Mix or the wet Meow Mix? The dry is junk. The wet is better than the dry but there are better quality wet foods out there and you don't need to go broke buying good quality food :)

Walmart has some OK foods. They contract with the manufacturers to make it the way Walmart wants. My cats like their Gourmet one and they don't barf it near as much as some of the other brands. Now hows that for a low standard -- They don't barf it as much so it must be better. :flail:

They also recently came out with a "Complete Nutrition" one that I have tried. Well, it might not be new as much as I never noticed it before. It passed the edible test, meaning most of it went somewhere other than the floor. Nobody died from it yet so that is also a plus. :yess:

Sometimes I think that we really need to work on developing People chow. Think of how much time and work that would save. Just a box of chow and some beer or wine and a big bottle of water. Eat it right out of the box so there are no dishes.

Like people have said, Meow Mix is pretty terrible. Cats need meat so when you look at Meow Mix ingredients and see that the first two ingredients are corn, that’s a huge red flag.

Try to get something with meat as the first ingredient. Chewy.com is a great site for cheap and good cat food. Good luck!

I bought this once and my cats did not touch it, and instead looked up at me with the kind of look that could be saying, "What is this, Mom?" So I knew from the start this wasn't good.

I remember that it didn't take long after Meow Mix (dry) first came out that it became known as "crack for cats". I think that phrase applies to a lot of dry foods these days. Most of the brands have long figured out how to entice cats to eat their dry kibble.

I wonder what everyone does when they have to be gone overnight and the cats are on wet only. I have no one here to feed mine, so I have to have dry for them to eat when I am gone. (though not very often!) I can't afford to pay a company, though I would if we are ever gone for longer. I feed mine Purina Pro dry. I have had cats live a normal lifespan years ago on cheap cat food. But most were outside cats that I am sure supplemented with prey. I would rather see someone feed cheap dry than not have a cat at all, you do what you can afford. Poor people don't have the best diets either, fresh food is expensive. But they are happy and live long, I haven't heard dire warnings that poor poeple all die young because of their diets!
I say feed what you can afford. Do research and find teh best for your money. But most of all, give love, that is what is the most important!

You could try Friskies or Fancy Feast! They are pretty inexpensive too. Make sure to stick to the classic patés though, they are the healthiest of those brands. Like kashmir64 kashmir64 said, make sure to switch slowly, that might be the reason for the diarrhea.

If I have to travel for work my bf feeds them. I leave him detailed instructions. Same with my visits back home to California. But...we’re gone for weeks once a year for vacation so we drop them off at boarding. 2 of the cats get switched to all can at that point and my diarrhea kitty goes on all freeze dried raw. Expensive but boarding is simply a nice chunk of our vacation budget. We really do limit our weekend trips since it’s such an ordeal and so expensive. But we don’t have any choice because one of my males gets urinary issues with even a little bit of dry and my other male has to eat raw or else he gets diarrhea. Even if everyone could eat dry my pig cat would eat all the food himself in one sitting.

We are lucky to have pet sitter who is OK to feed raw. When I go somewhere, she comes, feed raw. Then leave room temp canned and frozen canned food out. I think if it is only one night, you can try frozen canned? I normally make 3oz/1 frozen portion, but assume if I make it bigger, it will stay frozen longer time? I also bought this one, don't like plastic but can use freezer pack.

Yes, :hearthrob::redheartpump: !!

I feed Fancy Feast classic pate and the canned food from Aldi grocery store, my advice is so not to think of expensive canned food with quality, not always the case.
