Hi,

We’ve just adopted a 9 week old kitten yesterday. And while playing with him today we noticed a few black dots inside his ear (picture attached). Could someone take a look and see if its ear mites because its Good friday tomorrow and my vet will probably be closed :(

Thanks so much

Are they attached to his ear or can they be cleaned off with warm water.
we tried wiping it off with a qtip and a few black flakes came off but other than that they seem to be attached to the ear..

If you adopted him from a shelter I would email the photo to them and ask them to look at it. Otherwise are you registered with a vet yet, if so send the photo to them to see.

Mites are usually so tiny you can't see them, they are diagnosed by a scraping and the symptoms of extreme ear scratching. I would take a Q tip and dip it in some olive oil and clean the ear. Unless your kitten has been scratching almost nonstop i would say it's harmless. Like said above you could send/take that picture in.

I use baby wipes to wipe my cats’ ears if they get dirty. I’m too scared to use Qtips. If you’re afraid it’s ear mites you can try putting one drop of flea medicine into the ear then rub it a bit. My vet did that once when they were kittens and he told me it was ok. It made my cat’s ear droop for few hours probably due to the liquid inside.

But it you can scrape it off, I think it’s just stubborn skin dirt. This isn’t a worrying matter unless she’s scratching non stop. Just take her to the vet once they are available.

They look pitted inward? Are they? Maybe he just has some little dimples in his ear skin and the dirt gets caught easier?
