My BF Randall and I have been in the Bay Area almost a decade, and we decided to move to Colorado for a change of pace. Super exciting but moving two cats halfway across the country is daunting! He’s moved from Florida to California before with two cats, so he has some practice. I thought I would start this thread to document the journey of the two Humans and Olive and Gohan.
Day One: The Movers
This is one of the scarier times, when a kitty can escape the house or crawl into the dresser. We had pre-separated out the things we would need for hotels ahead of time and kept carriers out for them to acclimate to. We are using the Sleepypod carriers locally, and then transferring to airport carriers once our flight day is here. We are shipping my car, so extra carriers and stuff can go in the car when it ships.
When the movers came, Olive didn’t seem concerned and we got her in the carrier easily. She went in the bathroom. Gohan ran under the bed, so we blocked that off to do last. There was one tricky moment where he climbed into the dresser behind the drawers (a favorite hidey hole of his) and we took the drawers out and got him in the carrier and that went into the bathroom next to Olive. The chorus of meows from such suffering kitties! But they were safe. Eventually the movers were done (about 6 hours) and we went to check into our Kitty friendly hotel!
Day One: The Hotel
We didn’t know how they would react to the hotel. Smells, sounds, new stuff. We brought both carrier styles, toys, food, bowls, and a favorite bed for each. We didn’t know what to expect, although Gohan tends to sit still for hours after a move so we expected him to warm up slowly. Olive we rescued last year and to our knowledge has never moved house before. So she was a wildcard.
We brought them in and Gohan panicked and skunk around looked where to hide. The bed had a baseboard and was blocked off, thankfully, so he was pretty unsure. Olive was nervous but explored around bravely for a while. Then she hid under a chair and wouldn’t come out.
Gohan is very territory focused and smell aware. He always “maps” the house and checks out new objects. After 20-30 min, he started exploring and smelling everything. You could see him become less stressed the more he smelled objects we brought from home, and when he categorized he new smells. He was still a little cautious but soon he was owning the hotel room territory.
Olive would immediately engage and come out for food smells, but then she wouldn’t eat and would just rub my face and headbutt me. She got great comfort from me but would often retreat to the hiding spot under the chair. She eventually ate her dinner. We left out kibble and water overnight, but the wet food I rinse right away to avoid weird smells.
Day Two:
We awoke in the morning (and various times at night when a cat walked over us). The cats are more confident, and have found out how to go behind the dresser and sit atop the mini fridge. They seem more calm and are coming out more often without treat bribes. It’s going pretty well so far.
Today’s plan, for day two, is clean the house. Tomorrow will be the walkthrough with our landlady and then Sunday the kitties get to fly to Colorado. We have another hotel while we wait for our movers to arrive. So far so good! I’m so glad we brought the beds rom home, it definitely helped a lot.
