Cheaper Wet Foods In Canada

As I'm trying to trim the cat food budget a bit until the younger cat starts not eating so much as my older cat food requirements are expensive I'm looking for a cheaper but still decent canned food for him. Currently the canned part of his diet is Whole Earth Farm but he isn't the biggest fan of it. I know a lot of people on here feed Fancy Feast but I keep seeing mixed reviews on it so I'm not sure on it. When I was in Walmart I noticed they have a brand called Pure Balance but I can't find much for information/reviews on it, but the ingredients didn't look terrible. I'm located in northern British Columbia so a lot of the brands mentioned on here are sadly not an option, we have Walmart, Pet Valu and a couple independent pet food in town. Are there any other common options I could consider or thoughts on the mentioned ones?

This is just a thought.
When it comes to your local independently owned pet stores, sometimes, if they don't carry a certain brand of cat food, but it is available thru one of their distributors, they may special order it for you. And they should not charge you more for it, all they have to do is add it to their regular weekly or bi-weekly orders and call you when it's in.
My local pet store has done this for me, the only thing is you have to be on top of things and make sure you call them (in my case) at least two weeks in advance from when you think you will need it. The pet store only ordered from the distributor that carried the food I wanted every two weeks, so I had to make sure that I placed my request before the order went out.
In all, the only issue with this is if your food is on back order, you need to have a back-up food until it comes in and we could only order by the case, so if kitty didn't like the flavor, well...we were SOL because the pet store would not take it back. Thankfully, our kitty ate his food with no issues so we never ran into having a case of food that no-one would eat, but sometimes we did have to use a substitute due to back-orders.
So make friends with and support the local pet store owners, it does come in handy for other issues that may arise when it comes to having pets.:D

When I rescued my Maisie girl I contacted a rescue girl I know who feeds a lot of kittens. She recommended the Pet Valu brand of kitten canned food (brand is Performatrin) so I went with that from the get go. I feed mainly dry food with a side order of wet ; a small spoonful (which I have always warmed up in a little glass dish in a bowl of hot water) This is how I keep costs down while still providing the wet food.
The way I look at it, if kitty gets diarhhea, you can always opt out of the wet servings for a couple of days and still provide the dry (although I'm the kind of mama that cooks up chicken, rice and add pumpkin if this happens)

I deal quite a bit with the one independent store we have already quite a bit as most of what my rabbit eating cat has to be ordered in either thru them or homesalive.ca, local stores are wonderful to deal with for sure :)

I have looked/tried some of the Performatrin at the Pet Valu but it is actually more expensive than some of the other brands I can get at the independent store. The youngster was ok with that brand of canned but was less then thrilled with kibble. For kibble he's currently getting a mix of Fussie Cat Chicken & Turkey/FirstMate Chicken & Blueberries which he likes but I don't offer him that much kibble so he probably sees it as a treat. I just hope that soon he slows down his eating soon as last time I weighed him he was around 11 pounds and he's a September baby.

It’s so hard here in Canada. We have a Petsmart here so I’ve been feeding them Authority brand wet food. It is $1.49 for a 5.5 ounce can. They are both young...Binx just turned a year and Kaia will be a year in June....so they still eat a lot hence the cheaper food. I’ve actually started giving them one can of Friskies a day and one meal is raw food (commercially prepared frozen) which helps balance the cost and they LOVE the raw....especially Kaia.
Food with vegetables etc really upset Kaia’s stomach...and so many of them are full of that these days. The Performatrin ultra definitely disagrees with her! It’s tough because we don’t have half of what the states have.

Erin what raw brand are you feeding here in Canada and which store do you purchase from?
I know Pet Valu and Global carry different brands.

Also- I’ve never fed a mixed diet (commercial and raw) before just homemade raw ( I was feeding three cats and two dogs so it was cheaper to make my own.
Question: how might this affect their digestion processes if commercial takes longer to digest than raw? Any issues?

It’s a local brand called Furrballs choice. I buy the turkey for them. There is also Big Country Raw, you can order online from them. Our dog breeder swore by them. Furrballs choice uses local meat though and is just convenient for me.

I highly doubt 3 meals of canned and one of raw is causing any issues. If anything the raw has helped keep Kaia’s issues at bay and her body on track. I think the problems arise if you were to feed dry food and raw....at least from what I’ve read. We don’t feed our cats any dry.

I think from what I read it is more an issue if fed in the same meal, but there is a lot of conflicting info.

Pippin gets a Pets Go Raw puck(BC raw company) and canned food in the morning, canned and 1/4-1/2 cup kibble at afternoon/night. Beacon gets a Primal freeze dried rabbit nugget morning and night with canned and maybe a tablespoon or 2 of her kibble. I would love to do all raw but Pippin eats way too much to afford all commercial raw, Beacon turned her nose up at the frozen raw and I don't have time to make my own or figure that out. :dunno:
