Is this ok to give a cat? I read online that it's not so why does solid gold sell it?

It's not.

Best guess is the "coconut is the magical health remedy for everything" trend hit the pet world. Just like adding veggies and fruits into cat food, the pet food industry adds things to trigger someone unknowing to go "OMG! That's good for me so it must be good for them too."

Coconut milk isn't posionous and won't outright kill your cat. It just has no nutritional benefits and is likely to lead to obesity and diabetes from the fat, oil and sugar content. It's also a plant protein so it probably increases the protein content of the food at a lower cost then meat. It's a gimmicky food line to make people think it's healthier and fancy.

You shouldn't be giving your cat coconut milk as a snack or as part of their food.

That's a terrible idea for cat food! I looked at the shrimp/coconut milk bisque ingredients, which also include pea protein and potatoes.

The back of the pouch says, in fairly large letters, "never any meat by-product meal," which is mighty rich considering that at least meat by-product meal is made from animal matter rather than plants! That really feeds into what Kieka wrote about this being a "gimmicky food line": they're trying to sell based on coconut milk (fancy!) while they simultaneous make meat by-product meal (which is far more appropriate for cats!) sound low class. It's really unconscionable.

I'd say a good chunk of the raw meals for our pets are what food companies would call by products. It's not a bad word unless you're trying to feed your cat 5 year old road kill or something, and no cat is that stupid.
I did a quick inventory of pet food and found the following "by products" we feed several times a week.
-poultry hearts
-beef hearts
-chicken feet (you can throw away the joint support supplements if you feed these)
-duck feet (same thing)
-beef liver
-chicken liver
-beef pancrease, ground
-beef spleen, ground
-beef tripe
-beef trachea (for the dogs)
-beef gullet (for the dogs)
-beef tongue
-beef kidney
-chicken gizzards
-beef lung
and so on.
When a cat eats a mouse of a bird, they don't pick out the bones or pick out the liver, heart and kidney. Kieka Kieka is very right, a lot of the foods produced are meant to appeal to our own tastes. "Chicken by product meal" doesn't sound healthy, but "peas, potatoes, and carrots" sure do. Problem is, cats aren't humans.
I don't think this food if fed as a treat would do much harm, but for the money, I think you could do better.

And ("just sayin'" as they say) the really sad thing is that a lot of those ingredients are things people eat, too! I love chicken hearts and gizzards, have been served chicken feet at dim sum, and was fed all kinds of liver when I was a kid. I've refused beef tongue more times than I can count (difficulty with the taste buds still left on! but am sure I've eaten it in Russian soup)... I could go on and on!

Pork pancreas is a key ingredient in EZ Complete, the ingredient our vet thinks make the supplement work so well for Ireland.

Anyway, I'm done, rant over.

Rant some more, you make perfect sense.
I can't hack the taste of liver but I can take it in this nifty little powdered pill that has all kinds of stuff in it that I don't eat like kidney.
A few Aboriginal peoples have done the opposite of what today does, they eat the organs and the "by products" and feed the meat to the dogs because the organs and ingredients like that are where the nutritional powerhouse is.

All I know is I tried it for Lydia and she wouldn't even lick it (usually she'll at least try before vetoing a food). So she's definitely not sold on the gimmick!

Oh my goodness, I can't stand the taste of liver! I've only ever liked it once: on a weekend trip (Russia) where I'd specially asked that the group of students I was leading not be fed liver because nobody liked it. And what do you know? The first meal was liver. But it was so good (seriously good!) that I was the only one that even noticed. (And I didn't tell my students.)

And yes, those organ meats often have really good nutrients in them.

Please tell Lydia that I've never liked coconut milk, either!

Come to think of it, liver with coconut milk (with a side of avocado) would be my nightmare meal. :barfgreen::help:

See, we have this recipe we've been considering trying that's a really fine meatloaf, but the secret ingredient is liver. It's got beef, pork, onions, spices, a great sauce but we're just a little too chicken to try it.
I have never had coconut milk, until the dairy cattle all die of old age there's no need.

I tried these long ago when they first came out. If I remember correctly my cats loved them lol. They’re a nice thin mousse texture and my cats are way too into that texture lol.
