I am really worried about my 5 month old kitten Onyx. I've just got her spayed this morning at 8:00 A.M and it is currently 11:58 P.M & I've noticed a little bit of dried blood and a little bit of dried puss. She's acting pretty normal though. I am just scared she is going to hurt herself. I've tried a cone but she absolutely hates it.

I have a safety shirt that the local vet has provided me with, but it seems it is too small for her. I really don't know what to do & I'm scared to sleep. She is currently stretched out beside me lying on her side. What do I do?!

It is agonizing process to go through. I tortured a few friends with updates and concerns for hours on end when I brought my duo home. She’ll be fine most likely. Just monitor her. In another day or two she should be back to semi normal. By a week she’ll be herself and sweeter than ever. It’s a big procedure for females. Call the vet too if the puss doesn’t stop. They are used to anxious cat parents so no question is a dumb question. Mine were still feral so I couldn’t look at her tummy during.

And Congrats! You’ve extended her life and made a difference.

Most of all, Breath. It’s going to be okay. It’s rare for complications to arise. They do, but not often. Chances are likely she’s still under the drugs they gave her.

To add, let her sleep and heal. Both of you have had quite a day.

Also my male was as rambunctious as all the next day, pouncing on her as if all was back to normal. She’s a cat. They are tough and resilient. Even with them bouncing all over the following days they came through it just fine.

If the puss or blood is continuous then that is the time to call or bring her to the vet. A little bit of dried puss or dried blood is nothing alarming. For now I believe she is fine.

Keep us updated. Good job. :)

Update; it is currently 2:34 A.M, turns out Onyx's safety shirt is not too small ive only buttoned one side but thats only so I can finally get to sleep. Shes sound asleep and purring & breathing amazing. Onyx doesn't want to be alone, all she wants is to be beside me and to be cuddled I am super relieved that I was able to get her safety shirt on properly and comfortably

That's good!

It's scary when a cat has to go through any kind of surgery, but I really don't think you need to worry about her. I've had over 40 cats spayed and neutered without any issues at all.

As a general rule, a little bit of blood or discharge is to be expected. If you touch her spay site and it feels a lot hotter than the rest of her skin, or if it's starts to smell bad call the vet.

Obviously if there is a lot of bleeding or the spay site starts weeping you should call the vet, but if the scar isn't bleeding or oozing and it doesn't feel hot, she's fine.

Dried blood, even a little bit of clear discharge with a tiny bit of blood is perfectly normal. I really don't think pus could form in less then 24 hours, but keep an eye on it. There may be a firm lump at the incision site, that is from the internal stitches and swelling. That will flatten out over time. The main thing is to tempt her with food and water. My little feral I just had done didn't eat, drink, or even move for two days, very worrying! If she is acting pretty much normal and moving around, eating, drinking, and usuing the litter box, everything is going great. She may not have a bowel movement for a few days because she was pretty much cleaned out for surgery. The incision site will be a little red from irritation, watch close for spreading redness and extreme warmth. Cats are extremely tough, I haev seen them recover from horrifying injuries. But when it is YOUR little girl it is really nerve racking. All the luck! Just spoil her for a while, she has been really traumatized and needs quiet and lots of love!

Some cats need a cone/protective shirt, and others don't. Just keep monitoring her and the incision. If you catch her frequently messing with the area (a little licking isn't a big deal, but fixation can lead to infection/reopening), you'll need to use the cone or shirt.
